Baseball Blasts to DH Sweep at Berea

BEREA, Ky. -- The Covenant baseball team scored 33 runs combined in a doubleheader sweep of Berea on Friday evening in USA South action on the road. The Scots took the opener 12-6 before scoring a season-high 21 runs in a 21-6 rout in game two.

Covenant (20-17, 9-8 USA South) has won six straight games and 10 of the last 12 overall.

GAME ONE: Covenant 12, Berea 6

The Scots got out to an 8-0 lead after two innings and held off Berea for a 12-6 win in the opener.

Joseph Ridenour had three hits and three RBIs to lead the 17-hit attack. Ken Burke, Zeke Gilbert, and Josh Harvey also had three hits apiece, while Andrew Brock had two hits.

Harvey, Tyler Cox, and Ridenour all had RBI singles in the first inning as the Scots opened a 3-0 lead. In the second inning, Covenant scored five times with Gilbert, Burks, and Ridenour all producing run-scoring hits.

The Scots took a 10-0 lead in the sixth with two more runs before Berea scored six runs over two innings to trim the lead to 10-6 in the seventh.

Covenant tacked on two runs in the ninth to pull away.

Bryce Bollinger (6-1) went 5.1 innings to pick up the win, while Austin Clark notched his third save of the season with 3.2 innings of two-hit ball and zero earned runs.

GAME TWO: Covenant 21, Berea 6

Covenant had four innings with four or more runs and completed the sweep with a 21-6 victory in game two.

The Scots tallied 18 hits as Cox had four hits and four RBIs. Kenny Mills hit a grand slam in the ninth inning and went 2-for-5 with three runs and four RBIs. Harvey went 3-for-6 with three RBIs with Burke and Gilbert also collecting two hits each.

Zach Tolleson (3-2) was the beneficiary of the run support and he picked up his third win of the year after going five innings. Jackson Rau and Sean Hogg combined for four scoreless innings and eight strikeouts out of the bullpen.

Cox had the big hit in a four-run first for the Scots with a two-run double. Covenant trailed 6-5 heading to the sixth but the Scots regained the lead with a six-run frame. In the seventh, Covenant scored four more times as Harvey collected a two-run double. In the ninth, Mills' grand slam -- his ninth home run of the season -- capped another six-run inning.

UP NEXT

Covenant concludes the regular season on Saturday with a single-game at Berea (1 p.m.).
