LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. – The Covenant softball team finished out the regular season with a split with Agnes Scott on Senior Day. The Scots were topped in game one 6-3, but dominated in game two with an 11-0 shutout victory.
Covenant honored four seniors in Lauren Kierpa, Cope Whitaker, Aileen Hill, and Cassee Wood after the games.
Covenant (20-15, 10-6 USA South) records its first 20-win season since 2018 and it is the fifth time in program history the team has won at least 20 games in a year.
GAME ONE: Agnes Scott 6, Covenant 3
The visiting Scotties used 12 total hits and a three-run fourth inning to take game one, 6-3.
After the score was notched at one in the third, Agnes Scott connected on five hits in the top of the fourth to take a 4-1 lead.
The runs came thanks to RBI singles from Collen Thorson and Kilee Thomas, along with a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch.
The Scotties tacked on another run in the fifth, extending the lead to four (5-1). But, an RBI double from Vanessa Davis in Covenant's half of the inning made it 5-2.
Agnes Scott would answer with another run in the next inning, as KayLeigh Fitzgerald would record an RBI double to extend the lead back to four (6-2).Â
The Scots would then cut the deficit to three in the bottom of the sixth thanks to an RBI-single from Helena Nagy which made it 6-3.Â
Needing a rally, Covenant would have runners in scoring position in the seventh. But, Agnes Scott would stop the threat, sealing their three-run victory.
Lauren Kay and Whitaker both were 2-of-4. Davis and Nagy tallied one hit and one RBI apiece. Kierpa (8-9) was handed the loss after recording six strikeouts, two walks, and four earned runs in five innings pitched.Â
Fitzgerald and Thomas had two hits and two RBIs each. Regan Hutto (5-10) started in the circle for the Scotties and picked up the win with four strikeouts, one walk, and one earned run in 5.1 innings. Sidney Strama threw 1.2 innings of relief, earning her second save of the season.
GAME TWO: Covenant 11, Agnes Scott 0
The Scots scored 11 total runs over back-to-back innings to help secure an 11-0 victory in game two.
Covenant outhit the Scotties 12-4 in the shutout victory.
The score remained tied at zero until the Scots would score three runs off of four hits in the third.
Singles from Davis, Whitaker, and Jordan Holman along with a triple from Taylor Murdock helped Covenant take a 3-0 lead.Â
The runs would continue to come in for the Scots, as they would score eight in the bottom of the fourth off of five hits, with all runs scoring with two outs on the board.
After a fielder's choice and a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch had made it 5-0, Whitaker singled to right center, bringing in two more scores (7-0). A wild pitch then made it 8-0, followed by a RBI-double from Nagy which extended the lead to nine (9-0).
Kay and Murdock then recorded back-to-back singles, bringing in two more runs for the Scots and making it 11-0.
Kierpa and the Covenant defense made quick work of the Scotties in the top of the fifth, earning the 11-0 run-rule victory.
Whitaker finished 2-of-2 with three RBIs, while Murdock was 4-for-4 with an RBI. Kierpa (9-9) pitched the entirety of the contest, recording five strikeouts, one walk, and zero earned runs.
Megan Coggins (1-8) earned the loss, after allowing nine hits and three earned runs in 3.2 innings pitched.
The Scots improve to 10-6 in conference play (20-15 overall), while Agnes Scott falls to 1-13 (6-26 overall).
