DEMOREST, Ga. – The Covenant softball team dropped the opening contest of the USA South Tournament on Thursday afternoon as they were topped by Greensboro, 2-0.
USA South Pitcher of the Year, Cheyanne Cox, made it difficult for the Scots, striking out 11 and allowing only three hits in her shutout victory.
Lauren Kierpa would hold the Pride hitless through three innings, until an RBI-single from Alexis Sox in the bottom of the fourth gave Greensboro a 1-0 lead.
The score would stay that way until another RBI-single from Sox in the sixth would help add an insurance run, making it 2-0.
The Scots would have runners in scoring position in the third and fourth thanks to hits from Lauren Kay and Vanessa Davis. But, the Pride was ultimately able to stop the threats, resulting in their 2-0 win.Â
Kay was 1-of-3 with a double, while Davis and Rebecca Hazard recorded singles. Kierpa (9-10) received the loss after allowing an earned run and striking out three in six innings pitched.Â
Sox finished 2-of-3 with two RBIs, while Cox (14-5) earned the win.Â
