LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. – The Covenant softball team split a doubleheader with visiting conference foe Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon.
The Scots took the first game 4-2, while the Wolves prevailed in game two, 4-0.
Covenant now sits at 4-2 in USA South play (14-11 overall), while Wesleyan is 3-3 (12-9 overall).
GAME 1: Covenant 4, Wesleyan 2
The Scots used eight hits to gain the two-run victory in the first game of the doubleheader.
Covenant took a quick 1-0 lead in the first thanks to an RBI-groundout from Cope Whitaker, who brought around Jordan Holman, who had initially reached on a double.
Wesleyan quickly answered with two singles in the top of the second, which resulted in two runs and gave them a one-run lead (2-1).
The score would remain that way until the bottom of the fourth, when Covenant would score twice off of two hits.
Lauren Kay doubled, and Taylor Murdock produced a bases-loaded single that helped bring in the go-ahead runs (3-2).
Starting pitcher Lauren Kierpa then held the Wolves hitless for the next two innings, keeping the Scots' lead. Murdock would then tack on another run in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI-single, extending the lead to two heading into the final inning (4-2).
Wesleyan had a runner in scoring position in the top of the seventh thanks to a double from Presly Edwards. But, Covenant's defense quickly recorded three consecutive outs, giving them the 4-2 victory.
Murdock finished 3-of-4 with three RBIs, while Holman went 2-for-3. Kierpa (6-7) picked up the win after pitching all seven innings and recording one strikeout, two earned runs, and four walks.
Edwards was 2-of-3 with an RBI. Kimmy Dick (5-5) earned the loss with six strikeouts and four earned runs in six innings pitched.
GAME 2: Wesleyan 4, Covenant 0
It was a pitchers' duel in game two, as the score remained gridlocked at zero until the seventh inning.
Through the first six innings, Covenant pitcher Madison McDonald had only given up two hits; but, a four-hit seventh inning for the Wolves produced four runs, giving them the 4-0 victory.
Covenant had their best chance to score in the bottom of the fifth, with runners on first and third with two outs. But, Wesleyan was able to shut down the threat by gaining the third out on a pop up.
Holman, Murdock, Vanessa Davis, Rebecca Hazard, and Makenna Dance all had one hit apiece. McDonald (4-3) was handed the loss after throwing 6.2 innings and giving up four earned runs in the seventh.
Jasmine Staley was 1-for-3 with two RBIs, while Marilynn Nesmith was 2-of-4 with a pair of RBIs. Tihana Zupanic (5-5) pitched the entirety of the contest for the Wolves, striking out six and going 2-of-3 at the plate.

Covenant will head to Berea on Tuesday, April 5, for a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.
