LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The Covenant softball team earned its second USA South sweep of the year as the Scots took a pair of one-run victories over visiting Brevard on Saturday. The Scots rallied in both games and won game one, 9-8, before completing the sweep with a 7-6 victory in the finale.
Lauren Kay went 6-for-7 at the plate in the twin-bill for Covenant (16-11, 6-2 USA South), while
Maggie Harris notched the win in both contests.
GAME ONE: Covenant 9, Brevard 8
In a game that saw lots of back-and-forth action, the Scots were able to prevail over Brevard 9-8 thanks to two home runs from
Vanessa Davis.
On top of the homers, the Scots recorded four other extra-base hits, contributing to their total of 13 hits for game one.
Covenant had a 2-0 lead after two innings of play thanks to a home run from Davis in the first and an RBI double fromÂ
Helena Nagy in the second.
The visiting Tornados took the lead with a six-run fourth inning to go ahead 6-2. Brevard tallied five singles during the rally, on top of a three-run home run from Olivia Martinez.
The Scots quickly answered, however, with four runs of their own in the bottom of the inning, tying the game at 6-6. A triple from
Makenna Dance brought in two scores (6-4) and was immediately followed by an RBI double from
Alexa Gonzalez, which made it 6-5. Davis delivered again as she produced an RBI single to tie the game.
The Scots tacked on another two runs in the bottom of the fifth thanks to singles from Kay and Dance, along with another double from Gonzalez (8-6). However, Brevard responded with a two-out, two-run homer from Jocelyn Folkers in the top of the sixth to tie the score again at 8-8.
Davis was not to be outdone, though, as she quickly put Covenant up 9-8 in its half of the sixth with her second solo home run of the day. The homers marked her fourth and fifth of the season.
It was the ninth time in program history a player hit two homers in a game, but Davis is the first to achieve the feat since Morgan Lane in 2015.
Davis finished a perfect 3-for-3 with three RBIs, two home runs, and two runs scored. Kay was also perfect at the plate, going 4-for-4. Dance was 2-for-4 with three RBIs, while Gonzalez went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs.
Harris (2-0) picked up the win after pitching 3.1 innings of relief for starting Covenant pitcher
Lauren Kierpa. Harris recorded three earned runs, one walk, and two strikeouts.Â
Martinez (2-of-4) and Folkers (1-of-3) both had three RBIs and a home run. Abby Delp got the start in the circle for Brevard and tallied three strikeouts and six earned runs in three innings pitched. Grace Reynolds (0-1) earned the loss.
GAME TWO: Covenant 7, Brevard 6
The Scots overcame a four-run deficit for a second straight time in game two to garner the 7-6 victory.
The Tornados came out swinging, scoring three in the top of the first. Brevard used four hits, including a two-run double from Mikayla Morgan to take a quick 3-0 lead.
An RBI single from
Mary Elaine Mitchell in Covenant's half of the first quickly made it 3-1. But, the visiting Tornados would tack on two more runs in the top of the third, extending their lead to four (5-1).
The Scots were not to go quietly, though, as they would score five over the next two innings to take a one-run lead (6-5). A double from Kay and a single from Gonzalez helped score three in the bottom of the fourth, cutting the deficit to one (5-4). And in the fifth, an RBI single from
Rebecca Hazard tied it up at 5-5, which was followed by a single from
Helena Nagy that brought in the go-ahead run (6-5).
Three Brevard errors in the bottom of the sixth then helped add an insurance run for the Scots, making it 7-5 heading into the final inning.
The Tornados got three singles in the top of the seventh, scoring one (7-6). But, Covenant's defense ultimately shut down the threat, earning another one-run victory.
Kay and Nagy both went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Mitchell, Hazard, and Gonzalez all had one hit apiece and combined for four RBIs. Harris (3-0) picked up her second win of the day, pitching five innings of relief with two strikeouts and one earned run.
Morgan finished a perfect 4-for-4 with two RBIs, while Emily White went 3-for-4. Kaitlynn Farmer (3-6) was handed the loss after recording two strikeouts and five earned runs in five innings pitched.
