GREENVILLE, S.C. --
Bryce Bollinger extended his consecutive shutout inning streak and led the Covenant baseball team to a 4-0 win in game one at Bob Jones before the host Bruins rallied for a 5-4 victory over the Scots in the nightcap.
Covenant (6-7) and Bob Jones (2-11) will conclude their three-game series on Saturday at 12:30 p.m.
Bollinger tossed five scoreless innings to extend his shutout streak to 16.1 innings. It is the second-longest streak in program history, one inning shy of Garrett Kriston's mark of 17.1 innings set in 2014.
GAME ONE: Covenant 4, Bob Jones 0
Bollinger struck out seven over five innings and
Zeke Gilbert had three hits to lead the Scots to a 4-0 win in game one.
Bollinger (4-0), the reigning USA South Pitcher of the Week, scattered three hits and struck out seven without issuing a walk as he notched his fourth win of the season.
The Scots pulled together four runs on eight hits offensively. Gilbert had three hits, while
Jackson Redmon had two in the win.
It was Redmon that gave the Scots a 1-0 lead in the second inning. His two-out double to left-center field scored
McKaleb Harlemon from first base to put the Scots on the board. Covenant added two runs in the third as
Tyler Cox hit a sacrifice fly and
Josh Harvey drove in
Kenny Mills with an infield single to make it 3-0.
That was enough run support for Bollinger, who retired 10 straight batters in the middle innings.
Cody Gibson tossed a perfect sixth inning and Mills threw a scoreless seventh inning to secure the win.
Henry Wallach (1-3) got the loss for Bob Jones as he allowed four runs, one earned, on eight hits with four strikeouts in seven innings.Â
GAME TWO: Bob Jones 5, Covenant 4
A five-run fifth inning for Bob Jones erased a four-run Covenant lead and the host Bruins held off a Scots rally in the seventh to earn a twin-bill split, 5-4.
Covenant led 4-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning. The Scots scored a run in the first thanks to wildness from Bob Jones starter Joshua Legnard as he walked three and threw three wild pitches, one of which allowed Gilbert to score.
In the third, the Scots scored twice.
Wes Dusek delivered an RBI single that plated Harlemon before a Bruins error enabled
Andrew Brock to score with two outs. Gilbert then made it a 4-0 game in the fourth with a double that scored Mills.
In the fifth, Bob Jones scored for the first time all day. The Bruins sent 10 batters to the plate and scored five runs on three hits. Riley Ramsey's three-run, inside-the-park home run brought the Bruins within 4-3. Later in the inning, Daniel Barcena produced a two-run single to give the Bruins a 5-4 lead.
Covenant had a chance to tie the game in the seventh. Cox led off with a single and
George Manera pinch-ran for the senior. Manera stole second and then moved to third on a Harlemon ground out with one out. However, Bob Jones reliever Jerry Dunwoody got the last two Scots to strand Manera at third to end the game.
Zach Tolleson made the start for the Scots and went 4.1 innings striking out six and allowing three earned runs.
Conor Austin (1-1) was hit with the loss.Â
Gilbert had two hits for the Scots in four at-bats as Covenant put up eight hits.Â
Bob Jones reliever Tyler Pearson (1-0) got the win after throwing two scoreless innings, while Dunwoody picked up the save.
