LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Five Covenant baseball players recorded two hits apiece and the Scots tallied 12 hits on the day in a 10-6 win over Berry on a rainy Tuesday afternoon on Lookout Mountain.
Covenant (7-7) wins its first mid-week contest of the season, and the first of two games with Berry (12-6).
The Scots scored nine runs over the first four innings to build a 9-1 lead and used a solid relief effort to hold off the visiting Vikings.
Kenny Mills,
Zeke Gilbert,
Josh Harvey,
Joseph Ridenour, and
McKaleb Harlemon all had two hits each for the Scots in the victory.
After falling behind 1-0 in the top of the first, the Scots took the lead for good with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Harvey delivered an RBI single that plated Mills before Gilbert scored on a
Tyler Cox double play.
In the second inning, the Scots scored four times with Gilbert's bat providing the big blow. Gilbert delivered a two-run triple to center field and then scored on an errant Berry throw to give the Scots a 6-1 lead. Mills also had an RBI single during the four-run second frame.
Covenant tallied a single run in the third on
Andrew Brock's RBI ground out before Harlemon drove in two with a single in the fourth inning to give the Scots a 9-1 lead.
Berry got within 9-4 with a three-run sixth inning, but the Scots answered when
Chris Savage was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth.
Covenant used six pitchers in the win.
Cody Gibson (1-0) got the win after tossing two scoreless innings with two strikeouts.
Conor Austin and
Jackson Rau also had scoreless outings out of the bullpen.
Gilbert ended the day 2-for-4 with three runs and two RBIs, while Harlemon was 2-for-3 with two RBIs.Â
Berry starter Mark Swett (0-1) got the loss after going 1.2 innings. The Vikings had 14 hits, led by Andrew Pendleton's three.
