LAGRANGE, Ga. -- A second-half surge led the Covenant men's basketball team to an 80-70 victory at LaGrange in USA South action on Saturday.
Trailing by two (30-28) at the half, Covenant outscored the host Panthers 52-40, and shot 81 percent from the field, in the second half to pull away for the win. Covenant (11-6, 6-2 USA South) splits the season series with LaGrange (10-10, 5-2 USA South).
Will Crumly had his second double-double of the week as he poured in 19 points and 10 rebounds. Crumly was 7-of-8 from the field and scored 13 points in the second half.
Promise Igbanu had 17 points, while
Chris Barnette added 13 points and
Jonathan Gernatt 11 points, six rebounds, and three assists.
Off the bench, Covenant got eight points from
Jesse Kinard and seven from
Myles Jones.
Covenant hit 10 3-pointers and made 66.7 percent (10-of-15) from beyond the arc in the win. The Scots hit six triples in the second half. For the game, Covenant connected on a season-best 59.6 percent (28-of-47) and went 14-of-17 at the line.
The Scots trailed by 10 in the first half, but sliced into the deficit before halftime. A Jones 3-pointer in the waning second of the first half got the Scots within 30-28.
In the second half, Covenant heated up from the field. Gernatt hit a 3-pointer to give the Scots their first lead since early in the first half at 33-32 with 18:04 left in the second half.Â
The hot shooting continued throughout the second half. Jones converted a four-point play before Barnette and Kinard drilled 3-pointers on consecutive possessions to stretch the lead to eight (58-50) with 8:45 remaining.
Covenant went 18-of-22 from the field (81.8 percent) in the second half and 6-of-8 from 3-point land to seal the win.
LaGrange received 17 points from Bershard Edwards and a double-double of 15 points and 12 rebounds from Zac Hill. The Panthers were held to 44.4 percent (28-of-63) from the field with six 3-pointers.
