LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. – The Covenant softball team dropped a cold and rainy contest against the visiting Eagles on Saturday afternoon, 4-3.
The teams were originally scheduled to play a doubleheader, but game two was postponed due to weather conditions atop Lookout Mountain.
The Scots had a 3-0 lead heading into the seventh inning; but a four-run rally from Asbury would hand Covenant the close loss.Â
Covenant jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third, when Lauren Kay launched a home run over the center field fence. It was the second homer of the season for the freshman.
The Scots would then score twice more in their half of the fourth, making it 3-0 in their favor. Taylor Murdock reached base thanks to a single, which was followed by a two-run home run from Kathleen Carpenter, marking her second of the season.
Starting pitcher, Lauren Kierpa, only allowed Asbury three hits up until the top of the seventh. But, the visiting Eagles would quickly turn it around, producing four runs off of four hits in the inning. Asbury recorded four doubles during the rally, allowing them to take a one run lead (4-3).
The Scots had runners in scoring position in the bottom of the seventh; though, they could not capitalize, resulting in the 4-3 loss.
Kay was 1-for-3 with an RBI, while Carpenter went 2-for-2 with two RBIs. Kierpa (1-4) went 6.2 innings, recording four earned runs, three walks, and three strikeouts. Maggie Harris pitched 0.1 innings of relief.
