Game Recap: Softball |

Murdock's Shutout Leads Softball to Split at Emory

ATLANTA, Ga. – The Covenant softball team used double-digit hits in game two to force the split in Friday's doubleheader at Emory.

Emory was able to take game one 9-0, but the Scots' hot bats and Taylor Murdock's pitching in game two helped them produce a 10-0 shutout victory of their own.

The split brings Covenant's record to 5-6 overall, while the Eagles now sit at 6-6.

GAME 2: Covenant 10, Emory 0

Covenant came out swinging in game two, using 10 hits to garner a 10-0 run-rule victory over the Eagles. Starting pitcher Taylor Murdock (3-0) only gave up one hit and struck out four in her six innings pitched.

The Scots struck early, as singles from Murdock and Vanessa Davis helped them jump out to a 2-0 lead in the first.

That lead would quickly extend to five after three hits in Covenant's half of the second helped bring in three more runs. A single from Makenna Dance followed by back-to-back doubles from Helena Nagy and Davis made it 5-0 in favor of the Scots.

Both teams then remained hitless for two innings, until Covenant was able to tack on another run in the top of the fifth (6-0). Another double from Davis and a sacrifice fly from Murdock helped extend the lead to six.

In the top of the sixth, Covenant produced four more runs off of three hits to take a commanding 10-0 lead. Lauren Kierpa and Nagy both singled, while Davis launched a 2-RBI triple during the rally.

And after Emory was once again held hitless in their half of the sixth, the Scots were able to seal their 10-0 victory.

Davis was a homer shy of a cycle, going a perfect 4-of-4 with three RBIs and two doubles. Nagy was 2-for-3 with three RBIs, while Murdock went 1-of-2 with two RBIs. Murdock also threw four consecutive hitless innings in her shutout win.

Emory's lone hit was a single in the second inning from Tyler Miller. Mattie Ryan (5-2) started at pitcher for the Eagles and recorded three hits, one earned run, and one walk in 1.1 innings pitched. Natalie Swift pitched 4.2 innings of relief with four strikeouts, seven hits, and seven earned runs.

GAME 1: Emory 9, Covenant 0

Emory used five extra-base hits, including three homers, to take game one 9-0.

After scoring their first run in the bottom of the first, the host Eagles would produce back-to-back four-run innings in the third and fourth, giving them a 9-0 run rule victory.

The home runs came off the bats of Megan Weisenburg, Ryan, and Allie Moberg, who combined for eight RBIs. Ryan (5-1) pitched the entirety of the contest, walking one and striking out three.

Covenant tallied three total hits. Murdock went 2-for-2, while Kathleen Carpenter was 1-for-2. Kierpa (1-5) got the start in the circle for the Scots, pitching 3.1 innings, while Maggie Harris pitched 0.2 innings of relief.
