Softball Splits with George Fox after Comeback Win

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The Covenant softball team fell in Friday's opener to George Fox, but rallied back from a 4-0 deficit in game two to capture an 11-7 victory in the series finale.

The doubleheader split puts Covenant at 4-4 on the year.

GAME 2: Covenant 11, George Fox 7

The Scots used a seven-run fourth inning to take the lead and ultimately garner their first victory over the Bruins in the series.

After the Bruins jumped out to a 4-0 lead, the Scots used five hits in their half of the fourth to take a 7-4 lead.

In an inning that saw 12 Covenant batters, the rally got started by a solo home run down the left field line from Jordan Holman, which put the Scots on the board (4-1). All the following runs during the inning would come with two outs.

After Brianna Hill walked and Murdock reached on an error, Rebecca Hazard made it 4-2 with an RBI single. And after Makenna Dance loaded the bases with a single, Carpenter quickly tied it up with a single up the middle (4-4).

Back-to-back errors by the Bruins then allowed Dance to score, giving Covenant their first lead of the game and of the series (5-4). In her second at-bat of the inning, Holman would bring around two more runs for the Scots thanks to a single to right field (7-4).

After holding George Fox to a scoreless fifth inning, Covenant used singles from Vanessa Davis and Cope Whitaker to tack on another run and extend their lead to four (8-4).

The Bruins responded with three runs in their half of the sixth, quickly making it 8-7. But, not to be outdone, the Scots made it 11-7 with three more runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth.

A two-RBI double from Holman and a sacrifice fly from Whitaker allowed Covenant to take the four-run lead into the top of the seventh. And after quick three outs, the Scots were able to seal their 11-7 victory.

Holman finished game two with five RBIs and 3-of-4 at the plate. Carpenter was 1-for-2 with two RBIs, while Hazard went 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Murdock (2-0) pitched a complete game for the Scots, with six earned runs and four strikeouts and threw 166 pitches.

Kamryn Potter was 3-of-4 with an RBI. Emma Eastman (1-1) started in the circle for the Bruins and recorded three strikeouts, two walks, and one earned run in four innings pitched. Elise Wilkinson pitched two innings of relief, allowing five hits and four earned runs.

GAME 1: George Fox 13, Covenant 5

Though the Scots recorded eight hits in game one, the visiting Bruins' bats exploded to give them the 13-5 run-rule victory.

George Fox tallied 16 hits, 10 of which were extra-base hits. They also launched three home runs that resulted in six RBIs.

An RBI single from Holman gave the Scots their first run of the game in the bottom of the first (2-1). But George Fox answered with four more runs of their own in the top of the second, giving them a 6-1 lead. The Bruins also hit two homers during the inning.

Kathleen Carpenter would quickly cut the deficit to four, though, with her first career home run in Covenant's half of the second (6-2).

After George Fox tacked on another five runs in the top of the third (11-2), the Scots used four hits to garner another two runs (11-4). Lauren Kay, Helena Nagy, Murdock, and Rebecca Hazard all singled during the rally.

The Bruins would then use three consecutive doubles in the top of the fourth inning, which extended the lead back out to nine (13-4). The score would remain that way until the bottom of the fifth, where Covenant needed to score two runs to stay alive.

The Scots were able to get one across the plate thanks to a wild pitch, making it 13-5.

Carpenter was 2-for-2 with a home run, while Kay also went a perfect 2-for-2. Lauren Kierpa (1-3) got the start in the circle for the Scots and recorded one strikeout and six earned runs in two innings pitched. Maggie Harris pitched three innings of relief, striking out three.

Claire Fountain led George Fox, going 2-for-3 with a home run and four RBIs. Emma Classen (2-for-3, 2 RBIs) and Kimberly Pulido (3-for-4, 1 RBI) recorded the other home runs for the Bruins.
