LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. – On Senior Day in Barnes gymnasium, the visiting Panthers knocked down a total of 10 3-pointers to help them to a 73-59 victory over the Covenant women's basketball team.
The Scots honored two seniors in Nichole Rittgers and Hannah Monday.
Cosette Kirsch led all scorers with 20 points and eight rebounds. Ruthie Moore was one rebound shy of a double-double with her 19 points and nine rebounds. Elissa Moore added seven points and four rebounds.
Even though LaGrange hit eight of their 10 threes in the first half, the Scots were able to remain relatively close to their USA South opponents. After a tight first quarter ended in a 25-20 score in favor of the Panthers, a 14-6 LaGrange run quickly put them up by 13 at the 5:20 mark of the second quarter (39-26).
But, Covenant would use a layup from Kirsch and a series of free throws to cut the deficit to 10 heading into the half (44-34).
The Scots would open the third with a 7-3 run, which brought them within six (47-41). Ruthie Moore tallied five of the seven points during the run.
A quick 6-0 run from the Panthers, though, would put them right back up by 12 with just over two minutes to play in the period (53-41). But, another series of free throws and a 3-pointer from Karis McIntosh would once again make it a 10-point game heading into the fourth and final quarter (57-47).
The fourth quarter remained pretty even between the teams, with LaGrange only outscoring Covenant by four. But, the Scots could not decrease the gap enough, allowing the Panthers to gain the 14-point win (73-59).
LaGrange was led by Gracie Brunel with 16 points, while Breonna Glover had 14. Jalaya Lewis added nine points and 12 rebounds.
The Scots fall to 5-9 in conference play (9-12 overall), while the Panthers improve to 8-5 (13-9 overall).
