Baseball Opens Season with Loss to Emory

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The Covenant baseball team hit two home runs, including Harrison Adelgren's game-tying homer in the eighth inning, but visiting Emory scored five runs in the top of the ninth to pull away for a 10-5 victory over the Scots on Friday afternoon.

Covenant (0-1) and Emory (2-0) combined for six home runs on the day.

The Scots trailed 5-2 in the sixth inning but chipped away at the margin over the next three innings. In the sixth, Covenant scored twice to get within 5-4 as McKaleb Harlemon produced an RBI groundout before Wes Dusek delivered a run-scoring triple.

The hit was the first of Dusek's collegiate career and his first career RBI.

In the eighth, Adelgren hit his first career home run to tie the game. Adelgren took a 2-0 pitch from Emory reliever Kyle Sulkowski and launched over the left-center field fence for the leadoff homer.

Emory answered in the ninth with a pair of two-run home runs. Robby Wacker broke the tie with his two-run home run before Tyler McLoughlin added his own two-run shot two batters later.

Covenant took a 2-1 lead after two innings, thanks to a two-run blast from Kenny Mills. After Emory's Henry Pelinski gave the Eagles a 1-0 lead with a solo homer in the top of the second, Mills responded in the bottom of the frame with a no-doubt homer to left field.

Aaron Northcutt made his first career opening day start for the Scots and went 3.1 innings with four strikeouts. Austin Clark (0-1) got the loss, but was sharp in his first two innings out of the bullpen.

Joseph Ridenour and Mills each had two hits as the Scots tallied nine. Mills finished 2-for-3 with a walk to go with his home run.

Joey Bock made the start for Emory and struck out seven over five innings. Sulkowski (1-0) received the win.

Covenant and Emory will finish the series with a doubleheader on Saturday in Atlanta. Game one is set for noon.
