MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- Trailing by double-digits in the second half, the Covenant women's basketball team got within five late but could not complete the comeback in a 55-46 loss at Huntingdon in USA South play on Thursday night.
The loss drops the Scots to 9-11 overall and 5-8 in USA South play. Huntingdon (9-12, 5-7 USA South) secured a season split with the Scots with the win.
Megan Rouse had 15 points and eight rebounds to lead Covenant, while
Cosette Kirsch had 16 points and five rebounds.
Ruthie Moore added six points and
Naomi Crumley tallied four points and seven rebounds.
Covenant struggled from the field in the first two quarters and trailed 30-17 at the half.Â
The comeback trail began early in the third period as Rouse converted a conventional three-point play to trim the deficit to 30-20. Crumley and Kirsch added back-to-back baskets to get the Scots within six (30-24) and cap an 11-0 run that started at the end of the second quarter.
Huntingdon was able to keep it at least a two-possession game, however. The host Hawks stretched the lead back to 14 towards the end of the third, but a Kirsch 3-pointer in the waning seconds of the quarter trimmed the margin to nine (40-31).
Covenant made it a seven-point game on two occasions midway through the fourth. A Rouse jumper with 4:02 left made it a five-point game (46-41), but Huntingdon's Kinstin Davis answered with a bucket of her own to stretch the lead back. The Scots would not get closer than five the rest of the way.
Davis scored 14 points off the bench to lead the Hawks and Ry Whetstone added 13 points and nine rebounds.
