DEMOREST, Ga. --
Will Crumly scored a game-high 18 points and his jumper with 47 seconds left snapped a tie to lead the Covenant men's basketball team to a 58-52 win at Piedmont on Tuesday night inside Cave Arena.
The jumper was just the fourth made field goal of the second half for Covenant (10-6, 5-2 USA South) and the Scots saw a 14-point lead slip away in the half before rallying back and holding on for the win.Â
Crumly eclipsed 1,900 career points with his 18-point effort. The graduate produced a double-double with 10 rebounds and he went 6-of-9 from the field and 5-of-6 from the free throw line in the win.
Myles Jones was the only other Scot in double-figure scoring as he poured in 14 points, all in the first half.
Covenant grabbed a 10-point lead at the half, 37-27. The Scots hit seven 3-pointers in the first half, including four from Jones, and made 52 percent from the field to build the double-digit lead. Jones,
Chris Barnette, and
Jonathan Gernatt all hit 3-pointers during a 12-4 run to close out the half.
The lead grew to 14 early in the second half when Crumly drilled a 3-pointer with 15:30 remaining in the game to give the Scots a 45-31 edge.
Piedmont (7-11, 2-4 USA South) would not go away. The Lions held Covenant without a made field goal for nearly 15 minutes and used a 21-5 run during the stretch to take a 52-50 lead with 4:42 left in the contest.
Crumly tied the score at 52-52 with a pair of free throws with 2:20 remaining. The defensive battle continued until Crumly snapped the tie and gave Covenant the lead for good with his turnaround jumper with 47 seconds left.
Covenant forced Piedmont into a contested 3-point look that missed everything on the Lions' next possession and the Scots went 4-for-4 down the stretch at the free throw line to seal the win. Barnette and
Brady Palmer iced the game with two free throws each.
The free throw line was critical for Covenant as the Scots hit 16-of-18 at the line, including 12-of-14 in the second half. The Scots connected on 33.3 percent (17-of-51) from the field with eight 3-pointers in the game.
Barnette dished out six assists for the Scots to go along with five points and five rebounds.
Promise Igbanu had eight points, Palmer seven, and Gernatt grabbed six rebounds.
Piedmont got 14 points from Noah Reardon and 11 points from Jordan Foote. The Lions were held to 38.2 percent (21-of-55) from the floor and only 3-of-20 from 3-point land.
