Volleyball Adds to Win Streak after Asbury Sweep

Tonight (Oct. 18), Covenant Volleyball prevails as they add on yet another win to their current streak. Now for 10 straight games, the Scots have powered past their opponents and earning another sweep.

As the Scots faced Asbury tonight in Kentucky, the Eagles played with grit. None of the sets were taken easily, but Covenant had what it took to finish the match in three. Two sets were won by a two-point margin. The scores were 25-23, 25-20, and 26-24, each a battle of their own.

In the first set, the Scots and the Eagles had a lot of back-and-forth. Tied at 17-17, the Scots made a run and advanced the lead to 23-19. Only two points away from victory, the Eagles climbed back in, bringing the score back up to 23-22. A critical error from Asbury on the net gave the Scots the upper hand and all it took was a perfect pass from Kelsey Carman, and the delivery from Rachel Bartlett to two-time conference award winner Emma Kalbfleisch to take the first set from the Eagles.

Covenant led the entirety of the second set, extending their lead at one point to 17-10. The Eagles crept back in, fighting to keep the set alive. The score came within two near the end at 20-18. After a timeout from Covenant, Wharton's squad returned to court with determination and finished the second set 25-20, ending on a Kyla Bailey kill straight down the line.

The Scots came close to dropping the third set to Asbury after the Eagles came out with fire to take the third set. After playing a clean game all night, the Scots dropped a few points early on to critical errors. The Eagles were up 20-16 near the end of the match, in good position to take a set from the Scots. However, Covenant Volleyball began making plays and brought the score back to a tie game at 21-21.

The Eagles, with match point at their fingertips, lost the serve at 24-23. A great serve receive from libero, Anna Baldwin, put Covenant in the perfect position to stay in the game. A fantastic call from Bartlett, having her middle and right side run a play off the serve, Taylor Caldwell came in to hit a higher set from the middle while Emma Kalbfleisch drew the block up with her as she ran her usual route.

Emma Kalbfleisch finished the match with 13 kills and three blocks to lead the Scots' offense. With an astonishing percentage, Kalbfleisch not only led the pack, but hit .750, a rare number to achieve. The middle hitter has not only established herself has a dominant force for the Scots, but also the most effective.

Kyla Bailey tallied 11 kills, eight digs, and an ace in the win. Rachel Bartlett notched yet another double-double on the season with 38 assists and 12 digs, as she comes off the week with a conference award for Defensive Player of the Week for the CCS. Kelsey Carman played a great passing game and was second on the leader board in digs with 11.
The Scots are away once more this weekend as they head to play a tri-match hosted by Piedmont. There, Covenant will see two conference opponents for the second time this season (LaGrange and Piedmont).
