Game Recap: Volleyball |

Volleyball Climbs to Top of the Conference

Covenant Volleyball extends their win streak even further this week after an intense reverse sweep over Berea during a mid-week match. Following the Scots big win over the Mountaineers on Tuesday, October 11, Covenant was then tied at the top of the conference with Huntingdon.

Today, in a four-set win over Huntingdon and a 3-0 win over Agnes Scott, Covenant Volleyball rose to the first seed position of the Collegiate Conference of the South's regular season play. With only seven games left until the CCS Conference Tournament, nothing is guaranteed. However, the Scots are on a hot streak, winning 11 of their last 12 games.

Covenant Volleyball seems to have found a groove after the commencement of conference play back in September and are looking to defend their current standing until the tournament seeds are decided late October. A big game for the squad will be on October 25th at home as the Scots will take on Maryville for their second time around. Defeating Maryville 3-1 on their home turf was a key win this season for Covenant, so the upcoming match-up at Barnes will certainly be a battle.

In the win over Berea on Tuesday, the Scots struggled early, dropping two sets before initiating the reverse sweep. Hannah Haerer was the player of the game with 16 kills, making minimal errors. Emma Kalbfleisch, playing a new position on the court, was second on the leaderboard offensively, tallying 14 kills. The middle blocker was strategically switched to the outside in attempt to shake up the offense in order to pull out a win. The tactic drawn up by first-year head coach, Stephanie Warton, paid off and the Scots' plan succeeded, resulting in a thrilling conference win.

Today, in the Saturday tri-match hosted by the Agnes Scott Scotties, Covenant Volleyball accomplished what they came in to do– win. The Scots needed the victory over Huntingdon in order to advance to first place standing. Otherwise, they would have dropped to second if they had fallen to the Hawks.

Grace Logterman was the player of the game with 12 kills and nine blocks. Kyla Bailey and Emma Kalbfleisch also each chipped in nine kills a-piece in the win over Huntingdon.

Rachel Bartlett reached 500 assists on the season today after 31 assists against Huntingdon and 14 against Agnes Scott, an impressive feat for the Junior. Bartlett registered two double-doubles, leading defensively with 17 digs the first match and 14 in the second. In addition, a huge contribution to Scots defense in the Scots-Hawks match-up with four big blocks.

In the sweep over the Scotties, Kyla Bailey and Reagan Keener led offensively, each tallying seven kills.

The Scots are on the road October 18th as they travel to Kentucky to play Asbury at 5:00 PM.
