MARYVILLE, Tenn. -- The Covenant men's basketball team could not overcome a plethora of 3-pointers from host Maryville in a 95-63 loss to the No. 13-ranked Scots on Thursday night in USA South action.
Covenant (9-6, 4-2 USA South) received 14 points from
Promise Igbanu in the loss.
Maryville (15-1, 5-0 USA South), ranked No. 13 in the latest D3hoops.com Top 25, hit 13 3-pointers, and made 59.1 percent from deep en route to the win. The host Scots connected on 50 percent (36-of-72) from the field and had six players reach double-figure scoring.
It was a 17-4 scoring run for Maryville in the first half that opened up a tight game. An Igbanu bucket with 11:05 left in the half cut Covenant's deficit to 21-15, but Maryville outscored the Scots 17-4 over the next eight minutes to take a 38-19 lead.
Maryville extended its lead to 21 (47-26) at the half.
Covenant got within 14 early in the second half as Igbanu had four points and
Will Crumly hit a 3-pointer to draw the visiting Scots within 51-37 with 16:16 left. Maryville's 3-point shooting was too much, however, as the hosts hit 6-of-7 from behind the arc in the second half. Kordell Kah hit three 3-pointers in the second half and finished with a game-high 15 points.
Chris Barnette added 11 points and
Jonathan Gernatt had 10 points for Covenant. Crumly chipped in nine points with five rebounds and four assists, while
Jesse Kinard had nine points off the bench on three 3-pointers.Â
Covenant made eight 3-pointers but was held to 43.4 percent (23-of-53) shooting for the game.Â
Maryville also got 14 points from Myles Rasnick along with a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds from Felix Uadiale. The host Scots held a 43-28 rebounding edge and totaled 19 second-chance points.
