LYNCHBURG, Va. -- The Covenant men's soccer team was topped by Lynchburg 4-1 on Friday afternoon. The match marked the first road contest of the season for the Scots.
Two back-to-back goals from Brennan Lagana in the second half helped the Hornets pull away from the Scots and seal their second victory of the season.
Covenant was held to just two shots in the first period compared to Lynchburg's six. The shots for the Scots came from Mercer Stout and Austin Berry.
Scots' goalie Henry Hooks had already recorded three saves in the first half when Joey Daly got one past him in the 43rd minute, making it 1-0 in favor of Lynchburg.
Though Covenant got off five shot attempts in the second period, the host Hornets picked up right where they left off in the first.
Kenny Robles put one in making it 2-0 in the 50th minute. Soon after, in the 53rd minute, Lagana would score his first goal of the match assisted by Luke Mega (3-0). His second goal (assisted by Manzi Shalita) would come three minutes later in the 56th minute, giving his team the 4-0 lead.
Stout would score his first goal of the season in the 71st minute; but the Hornets would not allow another Covenant shot for the remainder of the contest, sealing their 4-1 victory.
Hooks finished the match with six saves on 10 shots on goal, having played the entire 90 minutes. Kyle Gallagher started in the goal for Lynchburg, playing 69:33 and earning three saves. Justin Ennis played the remaining 20:27, allowing the one Covenant goal of the match.
Stout, Berry, and Griffin Felton led the Scots with two shots each. Lagana tallied four shots, all of which were on goal. The Hornets ended the contest with 13 total shots compared to Covenant's seven.
The Scots fall to 0-1-1, while Lynchburg improves to 2-0-0.
