BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --
Mercer Stout scored with five seconds left in regulation to lift the Covenant men's soccer team to a wild, 3-2, victory on the road at Birmingham Southern on Wednesday night.
The goal was Stout's second of the match and capped a back-and-forth second half that saw all five goals scored between the two teams.
In the waning seconds of regulation, Covenant gained possession of the ball at midfield. Stout received a pass and then moved up the field before taking a shot from long range. The bounding ball snuck past the Birmingham Southern keeper Leo Reyes and into the net with five seconds left giving the Scots a 3-2 victory.
Covenant (4-3-1) has won four straight matches, while Birmingham Southern (4-3) sees its two-match win streak snapped. It was the Scots' third win over an SAA opponent this season.
Similar to last Tuesday's win over Berry, the Scots had to rally from a one-goal deficit in the second half. The host Panthers got on the board early in the second half with a goal from Christian Hernandez.
Covenant struck back with Stout's first goal of the night.
Griffin Felton's strong cross cleared to the far post, over a Panther defender, and Stout collected on the back-side and knocked in the shot from close range to even the score at 1-1.
The Scots took a 2-1 lead later in the half, when
Austin Berry scored his first goal of the season. Berry worked the middle of the field and blasted a shot into the back of the net to give Covenant a one-goal advantage.
Birmingham Southern rallied back, though. Coleman Jennings collected a loose ball inside the box and scored past Covenant keeper
Henry Hooks to tie the score at 2-2 with just over 10 minutes remaining.
Covenant had looks at the net in the final 10 minutes, but it was Stout's final-second strike that proved to be enough. The two-goal match for Stout were his second and third scores of the season.
Hooks made three saves at the net for the Scots. Covenant once again out-shot the opponent, marking a fourth straight match the Scots have accomplished the feat.
