WILMORE, Ky. --
Kade Theunissen scored his first two collegiate goals and another stifling defensive effort from the Covenant men's soccer team led to a 3-0 win for the Scots at Asbury on Tuesday night.
The win was the fifth straight for Covenant (5-3-1), while it was the third clean sheet during the winning streak.
Though the Scots dominated the stat sheet all night, it took until the 38th minute for the offense to strike. A
Thomas Drake attempt was saved by Asbury keeper Trey Miller, but the ball deflected right to Theunissen who cleaned it up from short range to give the Scots a 1-0 lead.
Just over two minutes later, the Scots struck again.
Knox Gibson found the back of the net from inside the box after collecting a loose ball to make it a 2-0 lead in the 40th minute. The goal was Gibson's first of the year.
Theunissen capped his first career two-goal match in the 66th minute. On a cross from
Jake Major, Theunissen knocked home the attempt to give the Scots a 3-0 margin.Â
That was more than enough for the Covenant defense. Strong back line play from
Jay Patterson,
Will Kenas,
Griffin Felton, and
Nathan Laughlin limited Asbury (1-6-1) to only four shots and one on target.
Henry Hooks and
Will Hicks, making his collegiate debut, combined for the shutout. Hooks made one save in 79-plus minutes.
Covenant held a 24-4 shot advantage as Theunissen, Gibson, and
Austin Berry each took three chances. It was the sixth straight match Covenant has out-shot its opponent.
Miller made 13 saves for the host Eagles.
