MARYVILLE, Tenn. --
Kailey Burrell netted her second two-goal match of the year and led the Covenant women's soccer team to a 3-1 victory over Bridgewater in the opener of the Maryville College Invitational on Friday afternoon.
It was the first meeting all-time between Covenant (2-2) and Bridgewater (2-1).
Burrell tallied two goals and one assist in the victory. It marked the second time this season that the senior registered five points as she also put up two goals and an assist in a win at Warren Wilson on Sept. 4.
The Scots got on the board first in the ninth minute thanks to Burrell.
Hannah Rodehaver's throw-in led Burrell into the box and the striker knocked her shot past Bridgewater keeper Sydney Davis to give Covenant a 1-0 lead.
Less than six minutes later, the combination of Rodehaver and Burrell were at it again. This time it was Rodehaver finishing off a touch pass inside the box from Burrell that gave the Scots a 2-0 lead. The goal was Rodehaver's first of the year.
Bridgewater cut the Scots' lead to 2-1 in the 20th minute when the Covenant defense knocked in a cross from Hanna Randolph for an own goal.
The defense would stand strong the rest of the way, though, for the Scots. Keeper
Lucy Sandhoff made a season-high 10 saves in the victory.
Burrell notched her second goal of the match in the 78th minute as she weaved her way through the Bridgewater defense and scored for the second time in the contest. The goals give Burrell four on the year and 28 in her career.
Bridgewater's Skylar Daum led all players with five shots as the Eagles outshot the Scots, 18-8. Davis made one save at the net for Bridgewater.
