MARYVILLE, Tenn. -- A goal in the first minute of play was the difference as the Covenant women's soccer team could not overcome Southern Virginia in a 1-0 loss on Saturday afternoon in the Maryville Invitational.
It was the first meeting all-time between Covenant (2-3) and Southern Virginia (2-2-1). Though Southern Virginia is a member of the USA South, the match was a non-conference contest.
Southern Virginia struck just 56 seconds into the match and made that lone goal stand up the rest of the way. The Knights' Abby Paulsen was played the ball from Delaynee McKeachnie and launched her shot past a diving attempt from Scots keeper
Lucy Sandhoff for the score.
The goal was Paulsen's first of the year.
Covenant, playing its second match in as many days, had limited opportunities in the opening 45 minutes. In the second half, the Scots picked up the pressure and tallied six shots in the period.
Kailey Burrell had six of the Scots' nine attempts in the match.
Sandhoff was strong at the net once again for Covenant as she registered six saves in 90 minutes. Southern Virginia's Abby Bloxham and Alyssa Trueman combined for the shutout.
