Softball Drops Two in DH against Wesleyan

MACON, Ga. -- The Covenant softball team fell in both games of Monday afternoon's double-header at Wesleyan. The Wolves produced back-to-back shutouts, taking game one 8-0 and game two 2-0.

GAME 1: Covenant 0, Wesleyan 8

The Wolves produced eight hits and recorded zero errors in its 8-0 shutout victory over the visiting Scots.

Wesleyan struck early, taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning thanks to a Savannah Pollock single and a Covenant error.

After pitching a three-up, three-down top of the second against the Scots, the Wolves were able to tack on two more runs in their half of the inning to take a 3-0 lead. A walk, an error, and a single from Jendayi Wright helped extend the lead during the rally.

Covenant finally connected on a hit in the top of the third inning, as Brianna Hill would record a single. But, the Wesleyan defense quickly gathered three outs soon after the hit, stopping the Scots' chance to score.

After scoring another run in the bottom of the third (4-0) and holding the Scots scoreless yet again in the top of the fourth, the Wolves would score four runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 8-0 lead.

The runs would come thanks to five hits, including four singles and a double from Bailey Caldwell.

Hill would single again in the top of the fifth, but it was not enough as Wesleyan was again able to stop Covenant from scoring, allowing them to take the 8-0 run-rule victory in five innings.

Hill was 2-for-2 with the sole hits for the Scots. Lauren Kierpa got the start in the circle for the Scots and pitched four innings with eight earned runs and four strikeouts.

Pollock was 1-for-3 with two RBIs, while Wright went 2-for-2 with an RBI. Caldwell was 1-for-2 with an RBI as well. Kimberly Dick started at pitcher for the Wolves, pitching five innings with zero earned runs and striking out six.

GAME 2: Covenant 0, Wesleyan 2

The bats for the Scots continued to struggle in game two, as they would again only tally two hits.

Though the Wolves had recorded four hits during the first two innings, the score remained tied at zero until the bottom of the fourth. From there, Wesleyan would tack on a run in the fourth and fifth innings, giving them a 2-0 lead.

The runs came thanks to four hits over the two innings, including three singles and another double from Caldwell. And after gaining the lead, the Wolves only gave up one hit for the rest of the contest, sealing their second shutout victory of the day.

Covenant had two hits for game two: a single from Faith Manning (1-for-3) in the fourth and a single from Tori Layfield (1-for-1) in the seventh. Kierpa started at pitcher for the Scots, pitching six innings with two earned runs and three strikeouts.

Caldwell went 2-for-3 with a single and a double. Dick got the start in the circle once again for the Wolves and copied her stat line from game one as she pitched seven innings with zero earned runs and six strikeouts.

Covenant falls to 5-7 in conference play (16-18 overall), while Wesleyan improves to 8-6 (14-16 overall).
