Softball Sweeps Wesleyan in DH

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. -- The Covenant softball team swept Wesleyan in a double-header Saturday afternoon. The Scots completed an impressive comeback in game one to win it 6-5, and then dominated in game two, winning it 10-2.

Though Wesleyan is a USA South opponent, the two games were played as non-conference contests. The two teams will play another double-header at Wesleyan on April 24 which will be an official conference series and will count towards conference standings.

The wins today improve Covenant to 6-10 overall.

GAME 1: Covenant 6, Wesleyan 5

The Scots overcame a 4-0 deficit with two home runs to come back and win the game 6-5.

Entering the bottom of the fifth inning, Covenant had only recorded three hits and had given up six, including a two-run homer by Lauran Allbritton in the top of the third.

But the Scots' bats came alive in their half of the fifth, scoring two runs off of two hits. Emma Giller doubled to right center, and Jordan Holman followed with a two-run shot over the right field fence. The runs cut the lead to two (4-2).

After a scoreless sixth inning for the visiting Wolves, Covenant responded with a four-run inning, recording two hits. After a few walks, Taylor Murdock hit a double, bringing in the third run (4-3). Brianna Hill would then bring in the tying run after hitting a sacrifice fly to right field, making it 4-4.

Next up was Giller, who responded with a two-run home run to center field to take the lead for the Scots, 6-4.

Wesleyan tried to rally in the top of the seventh, scoring a run and adding three hits. But, it was too late, as Covenant got the 6-5 victory.

Giller was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Covenant finished with seven hits and five RBIs.

Jennifer Coates (1-3) got the start in the circle and the win for the Scots, pitching all seven innings.

For the Wolves, Tihana Zupanic pitched five innings, and Kimberly Dick pitched an inning of relief. Dick is recorded with the loss (0-1).

GAME 2: Covenant 10, Wesleyan 2

Game two was a different story for the visiting Wolves, as Covenant's bats would drive in 10 runs off of 14 hits.

Entering the bottom of the fifth up by one (3-2), the Scots recorded a five-run inning off of five hits. Covenant hit three doubles in a row to start off the inning, making it a 5-2 lead.

Up next, Vaness Davis kept the rally going with her two-run homer over the left field fence. The runs extended the lead to five (7-2). After a throwing error brought in another run, the Scots finished the fifth with a 8-2 lead.

After a scoreless sixth for Wesleyan, a triple by Faith Manning and a double by Davis brought in the two winning runs, ending the game due to the run rule.

In game two, Holman was 2-for-4 with two doubles. Aileen Hill also hit two doubles and went 2-for-3. Tori Layfield and Manning both were 2-for-4 and earned two RBIs. Davis went a perfect 4-for-4 with four RBIs.

Lauren Kierpa pitched the entire contest for the Scots and gets the win (5-6).

Dick got the start in the circle for the Wolves and is recorded with another loss (0-2).
