SEWANEE, Tenn. -- The Covenant baseball team earned the impressive sweep at Sewanee in Saturday's double-header. The Scots took game one 13-4 and game two 9-3.
After recording zero hits in yesterday's contest against the Tigers, Covenant made up for it with their 33 hits and 21 RBIs in today's contests.
The Scots improve to 11-6 overall.
GAME 1: Covenant 13, Sewanee 4
Covenant recorded 15 hits in the win, including two home runs from Alex Gonzalez.
The Scots jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first inning. Doubles from Brooks DuBose and Tyler Moore helped bring in the runs.
Covenant would remain scoreless until the top of the fourth inning, when Gonzalez hit his first homer of the afternoon. The shot brought in two runs, making it 5-1. An RBI single from DuBose brought in the third run of the inning, extending the lead to five (6-1).
The Scots' bats stayed hot in the top of the fifth, as they scored four runs off of five hits. During the rally, McKaleb Harlemon hit a three-run homer, giving Covenant a 9-1 lead. Harlemon has homered in his last two appearances.
Four hits in the bottom of the fifth gave Sewanee two more runs, making it 10-3. The Scots gave up one more run in the seventh and entered the eighth up 10-4.
Another double from DuBose and a single from Joseph Ridenour brought in two runs in the eighth. Shortly after, Gonzalez hit his second home run of the contest in the top of the ninth, giving the Scots the 13-4 victory.
Gonzalez and Harlemon were both 2-for-5 with three RBIs each. DuBose went 3-for-5 with two doubles and four RBIs. Moore also recorded two doubles and was 2-for-4. Ridenour went 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
Nick Pettit (3-1) got the start on the mound for the Scots and struck out five.
Hayden Swisher started at pitcher for the Tigers and earns the loss (0-1).
GAME 2: Covenant 9, Sewanee 3
Covenant continued their hot hitting in game two, scoring nine runs off of 18 hits.
The Scots recorded six hits and four runs in the top of the first inning, jumping out to a quick 4-0 lead. Lewis Saunders, Hunter Christian, Gonzalez, DuBose, Harlemon, and Moore all hit singles to help bring in the first four runs.
Three more hits, including a double from Gonzalez, extended the lead to 6-0 after the top of the second. An RBI single from Moore in the fourth would bring in Covenant's seventh run, and doubles from Saunders and DuBose in the sixth would make it 8-0 heading into the seventh inning.
An error and a hit allowed the Tigers to bring one across home plate in the bottom of the seventh, making it 8-1.
Sewanee would score twice more in the bottom of the eighth, but in Covenant's half of the inning, Tyler Cox hit a solo home run to extend the lead as the Scots ran away with the 9-3 victory. It was the first career homer for Cox.
Saunders went 4-for-4 with an RBI and two doubles. DuBose was 2-for-3, and Gonzalez went 2-for-4. Moore went 3-for-4 with three RBIs, and Cox was a perfect 1-for-1 with a home run.
Zach Tolleson got the start on the mound for the Scots and only allowed one hit through six innings pitched.
The Tigers were held to six hits and were led by Jack Roode who was 2-for-5. Cy Spencer started at pitcher for Sewanee and allowed nine hits in two innings pitched.
Sewanee falls to 1-2.
