SEWANEE, Tenn. -- The Covenant baseball team used 11 hits on the road at Sewanee to get the 7-5 victory Tuesday afternoon. The win makes it three in a row over the Tigers this season.
The Scots have won six of their last seven contests and are now 12-6 overall. Over the last three games, Covenant has averaged 14.7 hits and 9 RBIs per game.
Though the game contained lots of back-n-forth action, the Scots used three hits in the top of the second inning to jump out to a quick 2-0 lead. Singles from Harrison Adelgren and Trevor Grapenthin along with a double from Tyler Cox helped bring in the first two runs.
The Tigers quickly responded with a four-run second inning, taking a 4-2 lead. During the rally, Sewanee recorded three hits, including a three-run homer by Wade Sansone.
But, the lead was not to be held for long as two Sewanee errors and a single from Josh Harvey helped tie the game up at 4-4 in the top of the third inning.
The score remained tied until the bottom of the fifth when the Tigers took a 5-4 lead. An RBI double from Wesley House helped bring in the go-ahead run. But singles from Lewis Saunders and Tyler Moore in Covenant's half of the sixth helped tie the game back up at five runs apiece.
After holding the Tigers scoreless in the bottom of the sixth, the Scots took back the lead in the seventh, scoring two runs. After a single by McKaleb Harlemon and a double from Brett McHugh put two runners on, Alex Gonzalez would hit a two-RBI single through the left side, making it 7-5.
Sewanee recorded two more hits for the remaining innings and had runners in scoring position in the ninth; but they could not capitalize, as Covenant would walk away with the 7-5 victory.
Saunders, Moore, Harlemon, and Cox all went 1-for-3. The Scots also tallied three doubles on the contest from Brooks DuBose, Brett McHugh, and Cox.
Noah Sweatman got the start on the mound for Covenant and was relieved by Austin Clark, who received the win (2-0). Kenny Mills came in to pitch in the bottom of the eighth and recorded his second save of the season.
Sewanee had eight hits for the game. Jack Roode was 2-for-4, and House was 3-for-5. Will Pesto started at pitcher for the Tigers, while Hayden Swisher earned the loss (0-2).
The Tigers drop to 1-3 overall.
