LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. -- The Covenant baseball team recorded nine runs off of eight hits in its 9-5 victory over Greenville Friday afternoon. The win improves the Scots to 7-5 overall, while the Panthers drop to 0-7.
Covenant jumped out to a 2-0 lead after three innings of play. The first run for the Scots came in the second after a passed ball brought in Ken Burke from third base. After two walks and a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases in the bottom of the third inning, Kenny Mills drew another walk at the plate, making it a 2-0 lead for Covenant.
After a scoreless fourth inning, the bats for the visiting Panthers would explode, as they would score five runs off of five hits in the top of the fifth. Greenville recorded two singles, two doubles, and a three-run homer during the hitting streak, as all five runs crossed the plate with two outs in the inning.
Entering their half of the sixth, Covenant trailed 5-2. After a Trevor Grapenthin single, Alex Gonzalez would hit his fourth home run of the season, cutting the lead to one (5-4). Gonzalez has hit three over the fence in the last four contests.
After Noah Sweatman held the Panthers to a scoreless top of the seventh, the Scots would bring across three more runs to take the 7-5 lead. Mills hit an RBI single to tie the game 5-5, before a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly by Hunter Christian brought in runs six and seven.
After yet another scoreless inning pitched by Sweatman, Covenant would seal the victory, scoring two more runs in the bottom of the eighth. The runs came off a two-RBI single from Brooks DuBose. The RBIs earn DuBose his 19th and 20th on the season, as he continues to lead the USA South in RBIs.
Gonzalez was 1-for-4 with two RBIs, while DuBose went 2-for-4 and recorded two RBIs. Mills was 2-for-3 and had two RBIs as well. Grapenthin was 2-for-4.
