LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. -- The Covenant softball team dropped two games to Reinhardt in today's double header on the mountain. Ranked in the top 25 in the nation for NAIA softball, the visiting Eagles bested the Scots 9-0 in the first game and took the second game 9-1.
The first game remained close for the first few innings. After the first two, the score was 0-0, with only one hit by Reinhardt.
Entering the top of the third, the Scots' starting pitcher Lauren Kierpa would give up a single and then quickly retire the next two batters. It was then that the nationally ranked Eagles would turn up the heat.
With two outs on the board, Reinhardt would score all nine of their runs off of seven hits. The visiting Eagles recorded a single, two doubles, and a 3-run homerun during their hot streak.
The nine-run inning proved to be too much for the Scots, as they struggled to make contact at the plate. Covenant only recorded one hit‒a double by Makenna Dance in the bottom of the fifth. The hit came too late, though, as the Scots lost the first game 9-0 after five innings due to the run rule.
Kierpa also got the start on the mound for the second contest of the afternoon. Covenant had a little more success at the plate, recording four hits. Dance hit a triple to lead it off for the Scots in the bottom of the first. Aileen Hill would then earn the RBI on her sacrifice fly as Dance scored the first run of the day for Covenant. Newcomer Jordan Holman also added a triple and a single, and Hill recorded a single during game two.
Like the first game, though, a big scoring inning by Reinhardt secured them the win. The Eagles scored five runs off of four hits in the top of the third and two more runs in the fourth. The Scots could not recover, as they dropped the second game 9-1 after five innings due to the run rule.
Baylie Sims also saw action on the mound for Covenant in both games, and Jennifer Coates finished out game two.
On the day as a whole, Reinhardt recorded 21 hits and one error. The Eagles improve to 4-0, while the Scots drop to 0-6.
