CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- A season unlike any other in the history of Covenant women's soccer began in a big way on Saturday as the Scots scored two second-half goals to claim a 2-0 win over Birmingham Southern at Chattanooga Christian School.
The match was moved to CCS due to field conditions at Scotland Yard. It was Covenant's first official match in the month of February in program history.
Covenant (1-0) controlled the play for the majority of the match and capitalized twice in the second half to pull away for the win. Kyra Duble scored the eventual game-winning goal in the 58th minute and Kailey Burrell added a penalty kick goal in the 80th minute.
Duble put the Scots on the board with her first goal of the season -- and 20th of her career -- 12 minutes into the second half. Burrell collected the ball and dribbled into the 18-yard box before slotting a pass to Duble inside the box where Duble finished past the Panthers' keeper for the score.
Burrell got into the scoring column in the 80th minute when she converted on a penalty kick opportunity. It was the 21st goal of her career.
Covenant outshot Birmingham Southern 21-6 on the day and 9-1 in shots on target. Scots keeper Lucy Sandhoff got the shutout as she saved the one attempt the visiting Panthers put on goal. Blakely Jones made seven saves for the Panthers.
Paige Simons Pettit and Megan Rasku had four shots apiece to lead Covenant. Abby Walker took three for the Panthers.
The win was Covenant's first over Birmingham Southern since 2016.
