BREVARD, N.C. -- The Covenant women's soccer team opened up USA South play with a 1-0 loss at Brevard on Saturday afternoon.
The match was the season opener for the host Tornados (1-0, 1-0 USA South) and the second contest for the Scots (1-1, 0-1 USA South).
Like the chilly playing conditions, the first half was cold for both teams. Covenant only took two shots: one by Megan Rasku and another by Leah Marr. Marr's shot on goal was saved by Brevard goalkeeper Rebeccah Rojas in the 33rd minute.
The Tornados only recorded four shots during the first 45 minutes and could not capitalize on any. Scots goalkeeper Lucy Sandhoff made one save on the four shots and would keep the score at the half to 0-0.
In the 47th minute of play, Rojas made a save on a bottom center shot by the Scots' Katie Davick. Shortly after the save, in the 53rd minute, Brevard scored the eventual game-winning goal as Taylor Richardson scored, assisted by Abbie Petrosky.
Covenant would only record one more shot in the remaining minutes, totaling four for the match. The shot would come from Abby White in the 86th minute and was stopped by Rojas. Brevard had six shots during the second period, resulting in 10 total (four being shots on goal).
Sandhoff played all 90 minutes for the Scots and totaled three saves. Rojas, who also played the entire contest, tallied three saves on the three Covenant shots on goal.
Rasku, Marr, White, and Davick each took one shot for the Scots. Six players for Brevard combined for 10 shots: Richardson recorded three, and Ashley Royster and Emma White both tallied two. Petrosky, Autumn Wright, and Tae Brown all added one shot a piece.
