Women's Hoops Completes Sweep of Brevard, 67-52

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- A second straight double-double from Destiny Mergilles and 16 points from Cosette Kirsch propelled the Covenant women's basketball team to a 67-52 win over Brevard and a weekend sweep of the visiting Tornados on Saturday inside Barnes PE Center.

Mergilles collected her sixth double-double of the season with a season-high 18 points with 10 rebounds while going 10-of-14 at the free-throw line. Kirsch added 16 points, eight rebounds, and three assists in the win.

Covenant (3-13, 2-6 USA South) has won two straight and has defeated Brevard (0-2, 0-2 USA South) in 10 consecutive meetings dating back to 2005.

A tighter game early on than Friday night's contest, Covenant trailed by six early in the first quarter but rallied to go on a 9-0 run to grab an 11-8 lead after a Megan Rouse free throw with 4:23 left. The lead stretched to 12 late in the second period before the Scots took a 32-24 edge into halftime.

Covenant outscored Brevard, 16-9, in the decisive third period as the margin grew to 15 (48-33) entering the fourth quarter. The Scots surged ahead by 30 with a 15-0 run to begin the fourth, capped by a Kirsch layup, to put the game out of reach at 63-33.

Ruthie Moore contributed 10 points, nine rebounds, and four assists, while Karis McIntosh had seven points and four rebounds.

Covenant again dominated the glass by outrebounding Brevard 51-34 with 14 offensive rebounds leading to 12 second-chance points. The Scots shot 38.6 percent (22-of-57) for the game with six 3-pointers and 17-of-30 at the foul line.

Brevard got 15 points and 11 rebounds from Deja Riddick and nine points from Victoria Green. Brevard hit 29.9 percent (20-of-67) from the field with 10 3-pointers.
