LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Destiny Mergilles and Naomi Crumley had 17 points apiece to lead the Covenant women's basketball team to a 68-38 win over Brevard in USA South action on Friday night.
Covenant (2-13, 1-6 USA South) snapped a six-game losing streak in a big way as the Scots led by as many as 32 points late in the contest. It was the season-opener for Brevard (0-1, 0-1 USA South).
It was a highlight night for both Mergilles and Crumley. Mergilles notched her fifth double-double of the year with her 17 points and 12 rebounds. Eight of Mergilles' rebounds were on offense as the Scots tallied 24 offensive rebounds and held a 54-44 rebound edge.
Crumley had a career-high 17 points, and the first time she has cracked double-digits this season, to go along with five steals and two rebounds.
It was a slow start for both teams as Covenant led 10-5 at the end of the first. The Scots built a double-digit lead in the second period, aided by five points each from Kora Dodson and Crumley, and led 28-14 at the half.
After an even third quarter, Covenant poured it on in the final stanza. The Scots outscored the visiting Tornados 22-7 in the period and made four 3-pointers to pull away for the win.
Covenant finished the night connecting on 31.6 percent (25-of-79) from the floor with seven 3-pointers. Dodson added seven points off the bench, while Cosette Kirsch had seven points and four assists. Ruthie Moore was held to five points, but dished out five assists and had 11 rebounds. Megan Rouse had four points and three blocks and Karis McIntosh added six points and three assists.
Brevard got 10 points and eight rebounds from Avery Lockwood, while Deja Riddick had nine points, 14 rebounds, and six assists. The Tornados were limited to 24.1 percent (14-of-58) from the field and 3-of-19 from deep.
