LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. -- The Covenant softball team completed the sweep against Centre in a double header Saturday afternoon. The Scots won game one 8-0 and game two 10-2. Both games ended in five innings due to the run rule.
It was the first games of the season for the visiting Colonels (0-2). Covenant improves to 2-8 on the year. The Scots recorded 17 hits and 13 RBIs on the day as a whole.
GAME 1: Covenant 8, Centre 0
The teams remained close through the third inning. Though Centre hit a single and a double, the Scots' defense prevented the Colonels from capitalizing on the hits. Entering Covenant's half of the fourth inning, the score was still 0-0.
It was the bottom of the fourth where the Scots would come alive. Covenant would start the inning with two players getting hit by pitches and one player getting walked. With the bases loaded, Aileen Hill hit a double to center field, bringing in three runs.
After Centre failed to score in the top of the fifth, the Scots finished out the game on an erupting five-run inning. Diana Muniz slammed a triple to lead off and soon after scored on a wild pitch. Makenna Dance would then hit a single, and two batters later, a double would be hit by Cope Whitaker.
The Scots finished it out by capitalizing on a Centre error, bringing in the final two runs.
Covenant ended game one with eight runs off of four hits. The Colonels recorded four hits.
Lauren Kierpa got the start on the mound for the Scots. Kierpa pitched all five innings and got the win (1-5).
Amanda Morgan (0-1) started at pitcher for Centre and pitched four innings. Andrea Searcy closed it out, pitching 0.2 innings.
GAME 2: Covenant 10, Centre 2
Leading off for the Scots, Jordan Holman slammed one out over the left field fence, giving Covenant a quick 1-0 lead. Holman would go 3-for-4 on the contest with two RBIs.
After a single by Faith Manning and a double by Tori Layfield, the Scots would end the first inning up 3-0.
The score stayed there until the top of the fourth, when Centre scored two runs off of three hits, making it 3-2.
The Scots would fail to score in their half of the fourth, but would turn it around in the fifth, scoring seven runs. Covenant recorded six hits in the final inning. Hill, Kierpa, Cope Whitaker, and Layfield all hit doubles. Muniz recorded a single and Holman hit a strong triple.
Layfield went 3-for-4 for game two and had three RBIs. Hill and Muniz both went 2-for-3. As a whole, the Scots had 13 hits and eight RBIs.
Kierpa got the start for game two as well and recorded her second win on the season (2-5). Branan Cob and Lucy Baseheart both spent time on the mound for the Colonels.
UP NEXT
Covenant will host Brenau for a doubleheader on Thursday, February 25. Game one is set for 1 p.m. on Lookout Mountain.
