LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. -- The Covenant baseball team opened up the home season this afternoon with a 21-8 win over Johnson. The Scots recorded 15 hits and 17 RBIs.
Four of Covenant's 15 hits were home runs. Lewis Saunders, Josh Harvey, Brooks DuBose, and Joseph Ridenour all hit one out of the park.
Before the bats got hot for Covenant, the visiting Royals struck first, jutting out to a quick 3-0 lead after the top of the second.
In the Scots' half of the second inning, two walks and a wild pitch brought McKaleb Harlemon in to score, cutting the lead to two.
Johnson scored two more runs off of two hits in the top of the third, making it 5-1. But in the bottom half, the Scots' bats would erupt.
Covenant scored six runs off of four hits during the third inning. Harvey homered with Tyler Moore on base, and Ridenour hit a three-run shot over the fence, giving the Scots a 7-5 lead.
The bottom of the fourth was a similar story, as Covenant recorded seven hits. The Scots scored 10 runs off of two doubles and five singles, making it 17-6. Dubose and Saunders would go on to hit their home runs in the bottom of the sixth, extending the lead to 13 (21-8).
Dubose went 3-for-4 and had six of the team's 17 RBIs. Saunders was 4-for-5 with two RBIs. Alex Gonzalez and Moore both hit doubles for the Scots.
The Royals recorded 12 hits. Rives Marshall and Timothy Howard both hit homers. Howard was 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Josh Stahlman also went 3-for-4.
Adam Carver gets the win for the Scots. Austin Clark and Aaron Northcutt also saw time on the mound.
Starting pitcher Travis Torosian records his first loss of the season for Johnson.
Covenant improves to 2-3, while the Royals fall to 0-8.
UP NEXT
Covenant will face Johnson again in a double header tomorrow, Feb. 20. First pitch for game one is set for 12 p.m.
