LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. -- The Covenant baseball team won both games in a doubleheader against Johnson on Saturday afternoon. The Scots beat the visiting Royals 9-4 in game one and 11-1 in game two.
Covenant won all three games in the Johnson series over Friday and Saturday. The Scots improve to 4-3 overall.
GAME 1: Covenant 9, Johnson 4
The bats for the Scots were hot in game one, as they scored nine runs off of 10 hits. Alex Gonzalez hit a double in the bottom of the first and would end up scoring off of an error, giving Covenant an early 1-0 lead. Gonzalez was 2-for-2 in game one.
From there, the score remained 1-0 until the fifth inning where Johnson scored two runs off of one hit, giving them the 2-1 lead.
But Covenant would end the game with back-to-back four-run innings. In the fifth, the Scots recorded two singles by Harrison Adelgren and Tyler Moore and a double by Brooks DuBose to bring in the four runs.
In the sixth, after an Adelgren double and a Gonzalez single, Lewis Saunders hit a three-run homer to left center, giving Covenant a 8-4 lead. Covenant ended the inning with four hits.
Nick Pettit got the start on the mound for the Scots. Pettit pitched 4.2 innings and only allowed one hit. Zach Tolleson and Conor Austin also spent some time pitching.
John Turner started pitching for the Royals, and Jacob Mallory and Taylor Flint also took the mound.
GAME 2: Covenant 11, Johnson 1
It was a similar story in game two, as the bats continued to stay hot for the Scots. Covenant recorded 10 hits and nine RBIs for the contest.
Saunders continued his hot streak with a double in the first inning, from which he would come in to score after stealing third base.
The Scots would take a 3-0 lead after a two-run third inning. After a double by Ken Burke and a walk earned by Gonzalez, Josh Harvey singled through the right side, bringing in two RBIs.
The visiting Royals would get a run up on the board in the top of the fifth, making it 3-1. But Covenant would answer with another hot inning to close it out.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Scots brought in eight runs off of six hits. McKaleb Harlemon, Gonzalez, and Saunders all hit singles. Hunter Christian, Harvey, and Moore all recorded doubles on the inning.
Harvey was 2-for-4 with four RBI, and Burke went 2-for-3. Over both games, the Scots had 20 hits and 16 RBIs.
For Covenant, Noah Sweatman got the start at the pitcher position, followed by Ross Skipper and Kenny Mills
Drew Toro and Derrick Lay were on the mound for Johnson.
UP NEXT
Covenant is scheduled to play against Bob Jones on February 26 in game one of a three-game series on Lookout Mountain. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
