Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Huntingdon Tops Women's Basketball, 69-50

MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- The Covenant women's basketball team dropped the first of a two-game series against Huntingdon on Friday night, 69-50. The loss breaks the Scots' four game winning streak and brings them their first conference loss since January 30.

Destiny Mergilles led the way for the Scots with yet another double-double, her seventh on the season. Mergilles put up 24 points and 15 rebounds. Sophomore Ruthie Moore added 14 points and nine rebounds, just one rebound shy of a double-double.

The Scots came out hot, starting the game on an 8-2 run. A Mergilles layup at the 4:57 mark would make it 14-4, extending Covenant's lead to 10. Mergilles and Moore combined for 12 of the Scots' 14 points during the period.

But, the Hawks would quickly cut the lead down to three, ending the period on a 7-0 run.

The second quarter was pretty even and saw lots of back and forth action. Huntingdon gained their first lead of the game off of a layup by Destiny Cross at the 5:06 mark (18-17). The Hawks extended their lead out to four, but a Moore 3-pointer would give Covenant the lead back with 1:25 left to play in the half (24-23).

The Scots would enter the second with a 29-25 lead. But it was the third quarter that the host Hawks turned up the heat.

Huntingdon would outscore Covenant 19-6 over the 10 minute period and hit five 3-pointers. A.B. Davis had nine points during the quarter off of three made shots from behind the arc. The Scots struggled to score from downtown, only hitting one 3-pointer for the entire contest.

The final period was a similar story, as the Scots struggled to score. Huntingdon hit another five shots from 3-point land and outscored Covenant 25-15. The Hawks finished with 11 3-pointers, 10 of which came in the second half.

Wyatt Bak led Huntingdon with 20 points and five steals. Davis added 15 points.

Covenant falls to 4-7 in USA South play (5-14 overall), and Huntingdon improves to 5-6.
