LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. -- The Covenant women's basketball team dropped their second loss of the season on Wednesday night against Sewanee, 66-55.
The Scots fall to 6-2 overall and remain undefeated in conference play (3-0).
Karis McIntosh led Covenant with 12 points, seven rebounds, and two steals. Madison Blevins added 10 points, while Ruthie Moore had nine points, on top of grabbing seven rebounds and three steals. Cosette Kirsch and Destiny Mergilles both contributed seven points.Â
The Scots started off hot in the first quarter, opening the contest with a 7-0 run. Covenant's defense denied the visiting Tigers a score until the 5:19 mark of the period when free throws from Kayla Antoine made it 7-2.
A 3-pointer from Kirsch with 3:48 to go in the first extended the Scots lead to nine (12-3). But Sewanee would outscore Covenant 10-6 for the remainder of the quarter, cutting the deficit to five heading into the second (18-13).
The Scots struggled to score in the second period, as they were only able to put up nine total points. The Tigers capitalized on the offensive drought, as they would open the quarter with a 7-0 run of their own and take a 20-18 lead at the 6:12 mark of the quarter.
McIntosh responded with a 3-pointer a few seconds later to help the Scots regain a 21-20 lead. And from there, back-and-forth action ensued as the teams began to trade baskets, leading to a 28-27 Sewanee lead at the half.
Covenant's offensive struggles continued into the third quarter, as the Tigers jumped ahead 42-31 thanks to a 14-4 run. The Scots then managed to string together a few points in the last two minutes of the quarter, cutting the deficit to nine heading into the fourth (46-37).
The Scots' offensive troubles lessened in the fourth quarter, but Sewanee kept their feet on the gas. McIntosh would hit one from downtown to cut the lead to seven (53-46) with 6:15 to play. But, the Tigers' hot hands proved to be too much, as they were able to run away with the 66-55 victory.
During the fourth quarter, Sewanee tallied a shooting percentage of over 45 percent from the field and 50 percent from behind-the-arc. The Tigers had several players in double figures: Kinsley Logan with 14, Keisha Phillips with 13, and Ellie Trenton with 11. Antoine recorded a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds.
The Tigers improve to 4-6 overall.Â
