SEWANEE, Tenn. -- The Covenant men's basketball team topped Sewanee 77-73 on Saturday afternoon, behind Brady Palmer's career-high 28 points.
Palmer went 10-for-16 from the floor and knocked down four 3-pointers. Chris Barnette added 15 points, while Jonathan Gernatt tied his career-high with eight points. Myles Jones contributed nine points, going a perfect 2-for-2 from 3-point land.
The first few minutes of the contest brought much back-and-forth action, until a 3-pointer from Palmer put the Scots up by five at the 12:42 mark (15-10). Palmer's bucket was part of a 7-0 run for Covenant that quickly made it 19-10 with 11:20 to go in the first half.
The Tigers would then string together a run of their own, as they tied it up 25-25 at the 5:05 mark after outscoring the Scots 15-6. From there, the back-and-forth action returned until consecutive scores from Palmer ended the half and gave Covenant a 39-29 lead.
Palmer started the second half right where he left off, as he immediately hit a 3-pointer to extend the Scots' lead to 13 (42-29). From there, Covenant kept their feet on the gas as free throws from Gernatt would make it 50-34 at the 16:42 mark.
The teams began to trade baskets, but another three by Palmer gave Covenant a 15 point lead (65-50) with just over seven minutes to play. The Tigers were not to go quietly though, and a 3-pointer from Tre Corrigan put them within four with 54 seconds to go (71-67).
A free throw from Barnette quickly made it 72-67, but a layup from Russ Marr brought Sewanee within three (72-69) with 40 seconds left on the clock.
But the rest of the contest would go Covenant's way, as Palmer would put in a layup with 36 seconds to go, giving the Scots a 74-69 lead. Covenant free throws would then close out the game, as they topped the host Tigers 77-73.
Colin Kahl led Sewanee with 27 points, while Corrigan tallied 17 and Marr added 12.
The Scots improve to 4-1, while the Tigers fall to 2-5.
