BEREA, Ky. -- The Covenant volleyball team clinched the No. 2 West seed in next week's USA South Tournament with a 3-1 (25-16, 26-25, 25-22, 25-16) win at Berea on Tuesday night inside the Seabury Center.
Covenant (18-8, 12-2 USA South) completed a season sweep of Berea (18-11, 10-4 USA South) with both contests going four sets. The Scots are locked into the No. 2 seed and will host a USA South Tournament quarterfinal round match at Barnes PE Center on Nov. 2 against the No. 3 West seed.
It was a block party for the Scots in the win as Covenant totaled a season-high 16 blocks and
Grace Logterman had 10 total blocks to go with seven kills, while
Emma Kalbfleisch had 10 kills and three blocks.Â
Rachel Bartlett had a double-double of 28 assists and 15 digs, and
Anna Baldwin had 25 digs.
Kyla Bailey also had seven kills and
Reagan Keener added six.
It was a game of big runs for Covenant. In the first set, the Scots used a 14-2 spurt to erase a four-point deficit and take a 17-9 lead en route to a 25-16 set one win.
After dropping the second set, the Scots trailed 22-21 late in the third. The momentum shifted to the Scots, though, as back-to-back kills from Keener and
Kelsey Carman gave Covenant a 23-22 lead. Consecutive errors from Berea gave the Scots a 25-22 set win and a 2-1 match lead.
Covenant surged ahead for good with a 6-1 run early in the fourth.
Savannah Savage had an ace, while Keener and Carman had kills that put the Scots ahead 11-5. Covenant extended the margin to 20-10 before a Carman kill secured the match.
Savage had 14 digs and a pair of aces in the win. Carman had four kills and eight digs.
Berea was led by Julie Santana's 14 kills.
UP NEXT
Covenant concludes the regular season on Saturday with a USA South tri-match at Brevard. The Scots face Wesleyan at 2 p.m. before taking on Brevard at 4 p.m.
