BEREA, Ky. -- The Covenant men's soccer team continued its hot streak as it took down Berea on the road Wednesday afternoon, 5-1.
The win extends the Scots' unbeaten streak to 10 and improves the team to 3-0-2 in USA South play (8-3-3 overall).
Covenant packed the first half with offense, scoring four goals and outshooting the Mountaineers 17 to two.
The Scots did not wait long to make the first move, as their first score would come in the third minute thanks to a goal from Austin Berry assisted by Jake Major. The score marked Berry's third game in a row with a goal.
Covenant then took a 2-0 lead in the 26th minute off a goal from Knox Gibson assisted by Mercer Stout. And soon after, in the 32nd minute, Stout would score his first goal of the game (assisted by Kade Theunissen), giving the Scots the 3-0 lead.
Berea would score their first and only goal of the game in the 40th minute thanks to a penalty kick goal by Junior Gyamfi (3-1). But, the Scots brought the lead right back to three when Robert Pettit (assisted by Theunissen) was able to get one past Mountaineers' goalie, Benjamin Rado, making it a score of 4-1 in favor of the Scots headed into halftime.
Starting the second period up by three, Covenant's fifth goal of the day came off the foot of Stout once again. Assisted by Jay Patterson, Stout made it 5-1 in the 48th minute with his fifth goal of the season.
From there, the Scots outshot Berea 11 to four for the remainder of the match. But, being unable to score sealed their 5-1 USA South matchup victory.
Stout led Covenant with two goals off of five shots and one assist. Berry tallied six shots and one goal, while Gibson and Pettit each had one goal off of two shots. Theunissen finished with two assists.
Henry Hooks played 73:51 in the goal for the Scots, earning one save. Samuel Drake played 16:09 of relief, with zero shots on goal recorded.
Max Jr. led the Mountaineers with four shots, while Gyamfi and Christoff Mendy both had one. Rado played the first half, with four goals allowed and three saves. Luis Macias was in the goal for the second period, allowing one goal and recording one save.
Berea falls to 0-6-0 in conference play and 1-12-1 overall.
