LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. -- Mercer Stout had a goal and three assists as the Covenant men's soccer team closed out the regular season with a 4-1 victory over Piedmont on Senior Day at Scotland Yard on Monday night.
The win extended the Scots' unbeaten streak to 11 and improved to 9-3-3 overall and 4-0-2 in USA South play. It is the longest unbeaten streak for Covenant since 2011.
The Scots had already locked up the No. 2 seed in the West Division in this week's USA South Tournament and looked sharp throughout the match.
Covenant recognized its senior class (Stout, Henry Hooks, Griffin Felton, Austin Berry, and Keegan Weekley) before the match. The group now owns a 31-3-4 USA South record during their careers and 47-13-7 overall with a USA South West Division regular season title in 2019.
Covenant did not take long to strike first, as Berry would score his fifth goal of the season in the 13th minute. Stout and Parker Owen assisted the score, which marked Berry's fourth match in a row with a goal.
In the 32nd minute, Kade Theunissen was then able to extend the Scots' lead to two with his chip-in goal, once again assisted by Stout. Stout's initial shot off a corner kick from Knox Gibson was saved before Theunissen cleaned up the loose ball in front of the net for his third goal of the year.
Heading into the second half with a 2-0 lead, Covenant picked up right where they left off. In the 61st minute, Stout won the ball at midfield and dribbled into the box before delivering a perfect cross to Jake Major, resulting in Major's sixth goal of the season and a 3-0 lead in favor of the Scots.
Piedmont (6-10, 2-4 USA South) answered with a goal in the 66th minute, making it 3-1. The score came off the foot of Lule Tekilemariam, assisted by Owen Gates.Â
The Scots were not finished there though.
After recording three assists on the night, Stout found the scoring column as he received a through ball from Owen and scored his sixth goal of the season in the 70th minute.
Covenant outshot Piedmont 24-6. Stout tallied seven shots, while Berry and Theunissen both had four shots. Owen added two assists and two shots.
Hooks played the entirety of the match in the goal for the Scots, earning three saves, for his ninth win of the year
Piedmont keeper CJ Wyborn played 69 minutes in the goal for the Lions, tallying 10 saves and allowing three goals.Â
