First Half Barrage Helps Women's Basketball Snap Skid

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The Covenant women's basketball team outscored visiting Agnes Scott by 15 in the second quarter to open up a big lead and cruised to a 63-48 victory over the Scotties in USA South action on Wednesday afternoon inside Barnes PE Center.

Bekah Walter had a game-high 16 points to lead Covenant (3-9, 1-3 USA South), which snapped a three-game losing streak with the victory. Margo Koby added a career-high 15 points to go along with seven steals, while Joanna Smith had eight points with six rebounds.

Covenant was slow out of the gate, but picked up the pace midway through the first quarter. A 10-2 run over a four-minute stretch, capped by a Kaley Hallmark layup at the 1:21 mark, gave the Scots a 14-7 lead.

Ahead 17-9 entering the second period, Covenant went on to outscore Agnes Scott 20-5 to take a commanding 37-14 lead at the break. The Scots shot 44.4 percent (8-of-18) in the period, while forcing nine Agnes Scott turnovers and limiting the Scotties to 20 percent shooting.

Covenant's lead would not dip below double-digits the rest of the way. The Scots took their largest lead of the game at 43-17 with 7:39 left in the third after a Smith jumper. Agnes Scott would only get as close as 14 over the final two periods.

Hallmark added seven points for Covenant, while Taylor Robinson dished out seven assists to go with five steals and four rebounds. Grace Potter made a pair of 3-pointers for her six points off the bench.

Covenant shot 33.8 percent (25-of-74) for the game, but capitalized on 34 Agnes Scott turnovers by scoring 31 points. The Scots had 16 assists on those 25 field goals.

Agnes Scott (0-13, 0-4 USA South) was led by Kalin Smith's 10 points and Garis Grant tallied six points and 17 rebounds. The Scotties connected on 39.6 percent (19-of-48) from the floor and out-rebounded Covenant 48-38.
