Softball Takes Two from Wesleyan

MACON, Ga. -- The Covenant softball team extended its win streak to four with a pair of victories over Wesleyan on Wednesday evening in Macon. Covenant took game one 7-1 before completing the sweep with a 5-4 win in the finale.

The Lady Scots move to 4-6 on the year with the wins.

GAME ONE: Covenant 7, Wesleyan 1

A four-run first inning was all Covenant needed to take game one over Wesleyan, 7-1.

The Lady Scots scored seven runs on 11 hits and used four pitchers to limit Wesleyan to one unearned run on five hits.

Covenant jumped out quickly on Wesleyan starter Valerie Clower by scoring four times on four hits in the top of the first. Shelby Ralston drove home Carlin Labuzan with a ringing double to left field before Erika Mast followed with a two-run single, plating Ralston and Casey Grover, to make it 3-0. The inning was capped on Madalyn Ames' bases-loaded walk.

The Lady Scots added two runs in the third to extend the lead to 6-0. Both runs came with two outs as Shannon Schmitt produced an RBI single before a double steal allowed Faith Manning to come home.

Covenant's final tally came in the sixth when Grace Turner singled home Kathryn Andrews for a 7-0 lead.

Tyler Epes made the start in the circle for Covenant before Carysn Stone (2-3), Turner, and Heather Long toed the rubber. Stone picked up the win as she tossed a scoreless second inning. Turner went three innings and gave up just two hits.

Labuzan and Ralston had two hits apiece for Covenant and Mast finished with a hit and two RBIs.

Clower (0-1) got the loss for the host Wolves as she went four innings. Kendra Roach had a hit and an RBI for Wesleyan.

GAME TWO: Covenant 5, Wesleyan 4

Covenant built a 5-0 lead after three innings and then held off a Wesleyan rally to preserve the 5-4 victory and the doubleheader sweep.

Sarah Huskey was strong once again in the circle for the Lady Scots. Huskey (2-0) started and went the first two innings before coming back into the game and throwing the final four innings to pick up the win. The right-hander allowed just four hits and struck out seven.

The offense once again got going early in the game as Covenant put two runs on the board in the top of the first. Grover ripped a two-run single to left-center field that plated Schmitt and Labuzan to make it 2-0. In the second, Shade Epes doubled home Jada Allmon and then scored herself on an Ames sacrifice bunt that turned into a Wesleyan error for a 4-0 lead.

Covenant made it 5-0 in the third as Wesleyan committed a pair of errors on the same play that enabled Ralston to score.

Wesleyan (0-2) made its comeback attempt in the fourth. The host Wolves got RBI hits from Yasnei Llavore and Victoria Clower to cut the margin to 5-2. Wesleyan added two runs later in the inning, but Huskey came back into the circle and limited the damage as Covenant clung to a 5-4 lead.

Epes went 3-for-4 to lead Covenant offensively, while Allmon had two hits in four at-bats. Schmitt, Grover, and Mast each had a hit apiece.

Shelby Crosby (0-1) got the loss for Wesleyan as she went all seven innings. Six different Wolves recorded a hit each.
