BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Covenant softball team saw its four-game win streak come to a halt on Tuesday with a pair of losses at region foe Birmingham Southern. Covenant dropped game one 10-1 before falling 3-1 in the nightcap.
The games were makeup contests from the doubleheader that was postponed on Feb. 7.
The losses drops the Lady Scots to 4-8 on the year, while Birmingham Southern goes to 4-2.
The bats struggled in both contests as Covenant scraped together just two hits in each game. Casey Grover and Madalyn Ames had one hit apiece in game one, while Shannon Schmitt and Shade Epes collected a hit each in game two.
Birmingham Southern used a five-run second inning in game one, all of which were unearned, to open a 5-0 lead. The host Panthers then added two runs in the third and another in the fourth to take an 8-0 lead.
Covenant got on the board in the fifth when Ames produced an infield single that enabled Madyson Gibbins to score from third. However, Birmingham Southern scored twice in the bottom of the fifth to seal the run-rule victory. Tyler Epes (0-3) got the loss in the circle for Covenant, while Haley Crumpton (3-0) was the winner for the Panthers.
In game two, Carsyn Stone threw six solid innings but Birmingham Southern was able to squeeze across enough runs to complete the doubleheader sweep. Stone (2-4) allowed just five hits and three runs, one earned, with three strikeouts in her outing.
Covenant tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the third when Shade Epes led off with a bunt single and scored two batter later on a wild pitch. Again, Birmingham Southern had the answer as it scored twoce in the bottom of the third and used strong outings in the circle from Jessica Perley (1-1) and Crumpton. Perley allowed two hits and a run, while Crumpton received the save after going the final 2.2 innings.

Covenant will host its home-opening doubleheader on Thursday against Judson (Ala.). Game one is set for 1 p.m.
