Scots Snap Skid Behind Second Half Goals

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The Covenant men's soccer team snapped its five-match winless streak by scoring twice in the second half and collecting its third shutout of the year in a 2-0 victory over Piedmont in USA South play at Scotland Yard on Wednesday night.

Even though Covenant (3-6-1, 1-3-1 USA South) hadn't won a match since Sept. 8, the Scots had dropped three one-goal decisions and tied another during the tough stretch.

With a scoreless match heading into the second half, Covenant took the lead for good in the 53rd minute. Noah Lee got a touch pass from Henry Paris then took it up the sideline and towards the left side of the box. Lee then ripped off a shot that got past a dive from Piedmont keeper Elliot Sailes and into the right corner of the net for the score. The goal was Lee's first career score.

Covenant kept the pressure on Piedmont for much of the second half, gaining a 10-6 shot advantage in the period. The work paid off in the 85th minute when Josh Brower crossed one into the middle of the box where Jonathan Barrett received it and scored from eight yards out. The goal was the first of the year for Barrett and his second career goal. Brower was credited with the assist, his second of the year.

Piedmont (5-2, 2-2 USA South) had chances in the first half to grab a lead. Tommy Hill's header inside the box was saved by Covenant keeper Jonathan Crossman in the 15th minute and the Lions' leading scorer, Chase Kane, put one on target from just outside the 18-yard box in the 43rd minute.

Crossman made four saves for the Scots, while Sailes also made four for Piedmont. Both teams took 15 shots on the night, while Covenant held a 6-4 edge in corner kicks.

Jesse Riggs and Josiah McDaniel had three shots apiece for Covenant. Kane led all players with four shots attempted.
