Men's Soccer Falls in Double-OT to Pfeiffer

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The Covenant men's soccer team could not hold on to a one-goal lead in the second half as visiting Pfeiffer rallied and took a 2-1 win in double overtime on Saturday evening at Scotland Yard.

The loss drops Covenant to 3-7-1 overall on the year, while Pfeiffer goes to 4-4. Pfeiffer is a reclassifying member of NCAA Division III and the USA South, but the match does not count towards league standings.

Covenant took a 1-0 lead in the 52nd minute when Jesse Riggs found the back of the net. Riggs took a free kick and had his shot attempt blocked, but the deflection came right to him. On the ricochet, Riggs took another attempt and the ball deflected again but bounded into the right-side of the net for the score. The goal was Riggs' third of the year.

Pfeiffer evened up the score in the 78th minute. Chris Brown collected his own deflection off a shot attempt and put it away to tie the score at 1-1. The goal was Brown's fifth of the year. The Scots had a chance to take the lead in 83rd minute, but both of Josh Brower's attempts were saved by Pfeiffer keeper Tomas Correa.

In the first overtime session, Covenant had two great looks at the net but came up empty. Carl Simakoff had a chance from inside the box in the 91st minute that was saved and 18 seconds later Anthony Buzzeo's attempt was also saved by Correa. Buzzeo would have another look in the 93rd minute, but his shot sailed just high of the target.

Pfeiffer would capitalize on its chance in the second overtime. Stenson Croom worked the ball into the box and then played it softly past Covenant keeper Paul Lemay to teammate Caleb Bratager, who put the ball in from short range to end the match. The goal was Bratager's fifth of the year.

Covenant outshot Pfeiffer 26-18 in the match, with Buzzeo taking a team-high seven shots. Lemay, making his first start of the year, made nine saves at the net for the Scots. Correa made 10 saves for the visiting Falcons.
