ATLANTA, Ga. -- On the road for the first time this season, the Covenant baseball team dropped a non-conference game to Oglethorpe, 8-6, on Wednesday night at Anderson Field in Atlanta.
The loss snaps a five-game win streak for Covenant (5-4). Oglethorpe goes to 5-2 overall on the year.
Covenant managed just two hits in the contest, but still found itself in the game in the late innings thanks to six Oglethorpe errors. Luke Harvey and Trenton Nobles collected the only hits for the Scots on the night. Harvey's base hit came in the top of the first inning to leadoff the frame.
Trailing 1-0 in the second, Covenant got on the board. Joel Johnson was hit by a pitch to begin the inning and later scored on an Oglethorpe error on Taylor Bloye's batted ball. Covenant would score single runs in the third and fourth innings to tie the game at 3-3. Alex Kerr had a sacrifice fly in the third and Nobles had the second Covenant hit with an RBI single in the fourth that scored Lewis Saunders.
Oglethorpe opened up a 7-3 lead in the fifth by scoring four runs. The Scots answered back with three runs in the seventh, on zero hits, to cut the deficit to 7-6. Oglethorpe committed four errors in the seventh. Johnson and Julien Amorelli scored on Oglethorpe errors before Saunders lifted a sacrifice fly to center field that plated Bloye to make it 7-6.
The host Stormy Petrels tacked on a run in the eighth and Covenant would not be able to mount a comeback in the final frame.
Grant Kierpa (0-1) made the start for Covenant and went five innings. Kyle Phillips and Bloye combined to allow just one run over the final three innings of work out of the bullpen.
Brandon Fish, Dee Kelly and Sam Held each went 3-for-4 for Oglethorpe with Kelly and Held driving in two runs apiece. Matt Davis (2-0) got the win in relief and Preston Vegotsky picked up the save.
