Baseball Throttles Oglethorpe, 15-3

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The Covenant baseball team has been on a tear recently at the plate and that trend continued on Tuesday as the Scots mashed 15 runs on 15 hits to defeat Oglethorpe 15-3 in non-conference action.

Covenant (18-14) has won seven of its last eight games and has scored double-digit runs in four of the last five contests. The win also gave the Scots a season split with Oglethorpe (15-16) after dropping a midweek game to the Stormy Petrels on Feb. 16.

Luke Harvey went 3-for-5 with two doubles and four RBIs on the day, while Perry Rigby was 3-for-4 with a home run and three runs batted in. Alex Kerr added a two-run home run and was 2-for-4 and Julien Amorelli collected two hits in four at-bats with an RBI.

Covenant took a 4-0 lead with four runs in the bottom of the second inning. All the runs came after there were two outs as Rigby and Taylor Bloye had RBI singles before Harvey hit a double off the right-center field fence bringing in two runs.

The Scots took complete control of the contest in the third with six runs on seven hits to make it 10-0. Amorelli, Rigby, Harvey, Trenton Nobles and Caleb Bloye all had RBI singles in the inning as Covenant sent 12 batters to the plate in the frame.

After Oglethorpe's Brandon Fish hit a solo home run in the top of the fourth, Rigby got the run back with a solo homer of his own in the bottom of the inning. The solo blast to left field was the third of the year for Rigby.

In the fifth, Kerr launched a two-run home run to left-center field, after Caleb Bloye had been hit with a pitch, to extend the lead to 13-3. Covenant then added two runs in the sixth as Harvey doubled home Devin Cerrato before a Nobles sacrifice fly made it 15-3.

That was plenty of offense for the Scots as reliever Drew Bradley set Oglethorpe down in order in the seventh bringing in the run-rule.

The offensive outburst aided the start by Covenant's Grant Kierpa. Kierpa (1-0) notches his first collegiate victory as he went six innings allowing three runs, two earned, on five hits with a strikeout.

Oglethorpe was led by Fish and Keith Dearden, who both homered in the game. Starter Kolin Zimmer (1-2) picks up the loss as he lasted just two innings while allowing four unearned runs.
