Softball Ends Season With Split; Lane Ties Record

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The Covenant softball team rebounded from a game one loss and took game two for a doubleheader split with non-conference foe Agnes Scott on Wednesday afternoon. The visiting Scotties took game one 12-4, but Covenant would pick up a 10-6 win in game two that was called after five innings due to darkness.

Covenant ends the season with an 18-21-1 overall record. The 18 wins are the most since 2012.

Playing in her final collegiate games, senior Morgan Lane recorded three hits combined in the twinbill and, in the process, tied the program's career record for hits with 177. Lane now sits atop the record book with former Lady Scot Beth Harris (2009-12).

GAME ONE: Agnes Scott 12, Covenant 4

Three different Agnes Scott hitters had three RBIs each as the visiting Scotties scored nine runs over the final two innings to pull away for a 12-4 victory in Wednesday's first game.

Agnes Scott took a 3-0 lead after scoring two runs in the second and another in the third before opening the game up with a four-run sixth inning to make it 7-0. Covenant answered with four runs in its half of the sixth as Kasey Hart drove in two runs with a double and Lane followed with a two-run single to cut the Covenant deficit to 7-4.

But Agnes Scott responded with five more runs in the top of the seventh to regain a comfortable lead.

Tyler Epes (4-8) picked up the pitching loss for the Lady Scots. Shade Epes went 2-for-3 with a run and walk, while Hart and Lane were both 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Jordan Brett and Joni Johnson also collected hits in the loss.

DeAnna Fulton, Jessica Costero and Kayla Trumbull, Agnes Scott's top three hitters in the order, combined to go 7-for-14 with nine RBIs. Starting pitcher Molly Baker threw the first five innings and then re-entered in the sixth to notch the win. Baker (5-9) went 6.2 innings allowing no runs on two hits.

GAME TWO: Covenant 10, Agnes Scott 6

Covenant scored five runs each in the second and third innings to rally and take game two of the doubleheader 10-6. The game was called after five innings due to darkness.

Lane capped her career by going 2-for-3 with two RBIs, while fellow senior Kendall Whann was 1-for-2 with an RBI and two runs scored. Senior Madison Quirk did not record a hit in her final game, but gunned down an Agnes Scott runner trying to score from third to end the top of the second inning.

After Quirk's play in center field in the top half of the inning, Covenant used the momentum to score five runs in its half to take a 5-3 lead. The Lady Scots batted around in the frame and received RBI singles from Whann and Lane sandwiched around a Hart RBI double and a Shade Epes sacrifice bunt that scored Joni Johnson

Agnes Scott got two runs back in the third as Jordyn Portis hit a two-run home run, but Covenant was at it again in the bottom of the inning. The Lady Scots scored five runs on just two hits in the inning and a Lane RBI double capped the frame and gave Covenant a 10-5 lead.

Cris Gant (7-7) gets the win as she allowed three earned runs over five innings of work with three strikeouts. Agnes Scott's Miranda Moore (0-1) surrendered four earned runs on seven hits in 2.1 innings in the loss.

Brett finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored for Covenant, while Jami Johnson was 1-for-1 with an RBI and a pair of runs scored. Shannon Schmitt and Hart each went 1-for-3.
